Shin Hye Sun Special: From Mr. Queen to See You In My 19th Life, 5 K-dramas to add to your watch-list
Although her career started in the early 2010s, it wasn’t until very late in the decade that she started landing lead roles in dramas and movies. Her first lead role was in the 2017 drama “My Golden Days” which shot her to stardom. Since then began a series of hit K-dramas and memorable roles for Shin Hye Sun. She will be soon seen in the slice-of-life K-drama “Welcome to Samdalri” opposite Ji Chang Wook. On the occasion of her birthday on August 31, let’s take a look at some of the career-defining characters played by Shin Hye Sun.
1. MR. QUEEN
The year 2020 was an eventful year in every sense of the word. But Shin Hye Sun’s historical fiction comedy-drama “Mr Queen” worked like a charm to ease the tension. Shin Hye Sun broke out of the traditional idea of a royal queen and portrayed a comic character with a pure heart. Starring opposite Kim Jung Hyun, Shin Hye Sun displayed stellar versatility in this time travel drama.
What would happen if one day you wake from a coma only to realise you have missed out on more than a decade of your life? Shin Hye Soon and Yang Se Jong tackle this problem and navigate their adult life in the drama “Thirty but Seventeen”.
Dramas that are based on real-life stories are not often seen. It takes quite a degree of versatility and courage to portray a real-life character on screen. Shin Hye Sun played the role of Yun Shim Deok in “Hymn of Death”. This drama is a mini-series and also stars Lee Jong Suk as poet Kim Woo Jin. The drama rose to gain a cult following within the K-drama community for its melancholic and heartbreaking story of love.
When you are hit hard by life’s challenges, you develop a sense of cynicism. It is a challenge in itself to overcome that cynicism. Times like these need one to have the full support of the family and peers, and perhaps an angel, too. Shin Hye Sun stars as Lee Yeon Seo, a ballerina who lost her vision after an accident. Since then she has lived life as a recluse. Infinite’s N aka Kim Myung Soo stars as a heavenly angel who is tasked with turning the cynic and recluse Yeon Seo into the lovely woman she was before.
Shin Hye Sun’s latest outing as an actor is also one of the most talked about K-dramas in the second half of 2023. In this drama, she stars opposite Ahn Bo Hyun. She stars as Ban Ji Eun, a woman who remembers all her previous births. The drama focuses on her 19th birth in this world and how she makes an attempt to meet with her love from her earlier life.
Shin Hye Sun’s foray into the movies came quite late but has been memorable indeed. In the movie Innocence, she stars as a lawyer Jung In who is determined to prove her mother innocent after her mother was charged with murder. Her mother suffers from memory loss and is unable to recollect the details. The movie deals with the mother-daughter bond and also shows the nail-biting situation of a courtroom.
