Actor Dolph Lundgren, who portrayed He-Man in the 1987 live-action film Masters of the Universe, has revealed that his cameo in the upcoming film was initially conceived differently. Lundgren made the disclosure at the film’s premiere, where he confirmed his return to the franchise in a supporting role.
Speaking about the evolution of his involvement, Lundgren said, “The original cameo was something different. It wasn’t as much of a role model. If I was going to be part of it, I wanted to make it special and make it something where the young He-Man could take the older He-Man’s words of wisdom with him, which he does now. And the director and producer liked my idea, so that’s what ended up in the script. ‘The muscles don’t make the man, kid.’ That’s what I’ve learned in my life.”
Lundgren’s other notable roles include Russian boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV and the title character in the 1989 Marvel Comics adaptation The Punisher. Reflecting on his return to the world of Eternia, Lundgren said, “It’s kind of daunting that it’s been 38 to 39 years since I was last on Eternia. It feels really cool to be back, though.”
Backed by Amazon MGM Studios and directed by Travis Knight, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, Camila Mendes as Teela, and Jared Leto as Skeletor, with Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms. The film also features Alison Brie, Morena Baccarin, and Kristen Wiig as the voice of Roboto.
Sony Pictures Releasing International will bring He-Man and the Masters of the Universe theatrically on June 5, 2026, in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam.
