Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy set to direct Daisy Ridley starrer Star Wars movie; James Mangold, Dave Filoni to helm two more feature films

For Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s project, it was previously revealed Steven Knight will be screen-writing following the departure of Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson.

Following years of Star Wars-centric TV projects and movies taking a backseat, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has announced three Star Wars movies are in the works with James Mangold, Dave Filoni and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy set to direct, respectively.

At the Star Wars Celebration on Friday in London, Kennedy announced that Daisy Ridley will return as Rey in the Star Wars universe and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will helm the project. “I have spent the better part of my life meeting real heroes who are overcoming oppressive regimes and battling impossible odds. And I think that is the heart of Star Wars,” she said at the event.

Kennedy revealed that James Mangold’s Star Wars movie will be set in the deep past whereas Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s will be set 15 years after Rise of Skywalker. Interestingly, Dave Filoni’s feature film will be set in the present. As per The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will act “as a climactic event for the current Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and the upcoming Ahsoka. Filoni is an executive producer and creative guide on these series.”

At the event, Mangold said his directorial will be a “Biblical epic” which will tackle the origins of Force and be set “25,000 years before any of the timelines and stories”. “When I first started talking to Kathy [Kathleen Kennedy] about doing one of these pictures, what occurred to me was thinking about what kind of genre of movie within Star Wars I wanted to do,” he said, as per THR. “And I thought about a Biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments, about the dawning of the Force. Where did the Force come from, when did we discover it, when did we learn how to use it?”

For Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s project, Deadline had previously revealed Steven Knight will be screen-writing following the departure of Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson.
