Japanese - Indian artist Mia Takarabe has teamed up with two-time Grammy-nominated producer Steve Aoki for their new single ‘Heartless’, which was released on June 5 via Handcraft Entertainment. The collaboration brings together artists with multicultural backgrounds and arrives at a time when Asian music genres continue to expand their presence across international markets, including India.
The release has drawn attention not only for the pairing of the two artists but also for its broader positioning within the global music landscape. While K-pop has established a strong international footprint over the past decade, J-pop has been steadily exploring opportunities to connect with audiences beyond Japan. ‘Heartless’ is being presented as part of that ongoing effort.
Mia Takarabe, who is of Japanese and Indian heritage, was born in Adelaide and raised between Tokyo and Melbourne. A singer, dancer, and model, she has built her artistic identity around her multicultural upbringing and multilingual abilities. Her Indian roots have also become an important part of how she is being introduced to audiences in markets such as India. Speaking about the song, Mia shared, “I never wanted to choose between being Japanese and being global. ‘Heartless’ is about proving you can be both completely.”
For Steve Aoki, the collaboration also carries personal significance. The producer, who has previously worked on major international projects and collaborations across genres, believes the track reflects how J-pop can continue reaching new audiences while maintaining its cultural identity. “As a Japanese American artist, this collaboration feels especially meaningful to me. The project is backed by Handcraft Entertainment, led by founder Michael Africk, a producer known for his extensive work in the Japanese music industry. Africk, who has been involved in numerous commercially successful releases in Japan, views Heartless as part of a larger effort to support globally minded J-pop artists. Commenting on the release, Africk said, “This isn't a crossover experiment. Steve has helped shift the global landscape before, and Mia represents a new generation of artists capable of leading what comes next.”
With ‘Heartless’ now available across major streaming platforms, the release adds another chapter to the growing exchange between Asian music markets and international audiences.
