The Little Mermaid: Disney unveils new poster for live-action adaptation; trailer to debut at Oscar 2023

Disney has officially unveiled the new poster for live-action adaptation The Little Mermaid whose trailer will debut at Oscar 2023.

The new poster features Halle Bailey's Ariel with blue and green scales, sitting on her famous rock at sea against a stormy sky. Sharing the poster, Disney announced that the first trailer will debut during the Oscars on Sunday, March 12.

The beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure, The Little Mermaid stars singer and actress Halle Bailey as Ariel; Tony Award®️ winner Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian; Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder and Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle.

Additionally, Jonah Hauer-King also stars as Prince Eric; Art Malik as Sir Grimsby; Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina; with Oscar️ winner Javier Bardem as King Triton; and two-time Academy Award️ nominee Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.

Bailey recently spoke about the backlash the film received for changing the character's race from the animated film. “As a Black person, you just expect it and it's not really a shock anymore,” Bailey said. “I know people are like, ‘It's not about race.’ But now that I'm her... People don't understand that when you're Black there's this whole other community. It's so important for us to see ourselves.”

Despite the backlash over her casting, test audiences reportedly praised Bailey's performance as Ariel, per CBR report. Helmed by visionary filmmaker Rob Marshall, Disney India releases The Little Mermaid on May 26, 2023. Only in cinemas.
