After a seven-year gap, the Star Wars universe is set to return to theatres with Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau. The upcoming film marks a major theatrical expansion of the world introduced through The Mandalorian series and will continue the story of Din Djarin and Grogu on a larger cinematic scale.
Favreau, who played a key role in shaping the streaming-era success of Star Wars, recently reflected on what the franchise meant to him growing up and the responsibility of introducing it to newer audiences through the upcoming film.
“To have the opportunity to present this [film] in a theatre, not just to people who have always loved Star Wars, but to introduce a new generation to Star Wars, to know that you want to reach out and get people as excited about Star Wars as you are and to make them feel the way that I felt the first time I saw it…I think that's a responsibility," Favreau says. "And we've thought tremendously about this because we've been working together for so long. We want to make an experience that doesn't rely upon somebody already loving Star Wars but gives them an opportunity to fall in love with it the way we have.”
The filmmaker also spoke about how his own childhood experience watching the original Star Wars film in 1977 influenced his approach to storytelling. According to Favreau, the goal is to create a film that balances nostalgia for longtime fans while remaining accessible to audiences discovering the franchise for the first time.
At the core of The Mandalorian and Grogu is the evolving relationship between Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, and Grogu. The film continues their journey in a galaxy still rebuilding after the fall of the Empire, with remnants of Imperial power continuing to threaten the fragile New Republic.
The project has been written by Jon Favreau alongside Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor. The film is produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Dave Filoni, and Ian Bryce, with music composed by Academy Award-winning composer Ludwig Göransson.
Backed by Lucasfilm, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu has been filmed for IMAX and is scheduled to release exclusively in theatres on May 22, 2026, in English and Hindi.
