Johnny Depp to mark feature film comeback with Jeanne Du Barry since Amber Heard defamation trial; film to open Cannes Festival

Johnny Depp is all set to mark his first onscreen role since his and former wife Amber Heard’s long-running defamation trial (which was won by Depp in December) and Depp seems pretty excited about his comeback! The Pirates of the Caribbean star will portray a controversial French King Louis XV in historical drama film Jeanne Du Barry, will reportedly open 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

According to People, a source close to Depp shared that since the trial, Depp has been living in Europe and “focused on work.” The insider added, “Filming was challenging, but Johnny is excited about the comeback. He thinks it’s perfect that this historical drama will open at Cannes.” The historical drama is produced by Pascal Caucheteux and Gregoire Sorlat’s Paris-based Why Not Productions and Depp’s banner IN2.

Le Pacte will distribute the film in France on the same day as Cannes’ opening night, on May 16. Meanwhile, the Cannes Film Festival is set to reveal its Official Selection on April 13, with the highly anticipated U.S. films, Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny by Disney, already confirmed.

The official synopsis reads, “Jeanne Vaubernier, a young working-class woman hungry for culture and pleasure, uses her intelligence and allure to climb the rungs of the social ladder one by one. She becomes the favourite of King Louis XV who, unaware of her status as courtesan, regains through her his appetite for life. They fall madly in love. Against all propriety and etiquette, Jeanne moves to Versailles, where her arrival scandalizes the court.”
