The sequel continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word “SHAZAM!,” is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam. In an exclusive interview, the movie’s two stars Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer talk about the movie and how much fun they had on the sequel.
EXCLUSIVE: Shazam! Fury Of The Gods stars Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer speak about their friendship, superheroes, and working with Helen Mirren
Jack Dylan Grazer, who plays Freddy in the movie, says that their bond has evolved a lot throughout the two movies. “I think it goes hand in hand. The more we bond as friends and as humans, the easier it is to act. I actually think that's true, actually, because it also kind of makes it hard as we laugh too much. It’s hard to kind of keep a straight face with this little gremlin. Somehow, we worked in syncopation while acting and befriending and loving and growing and ageing. It all like it kind of fell into perfect place,” he told Bollywood Hungama in an exclusive interview.
Asher Angel, who plays young Shazam, feels the same sentiment as he adds, “I feel like during the first film, I didn't really get to spend that much time with Jack until our press tour. Honestly, that's kind of where we just bonded and we spent a lot of time together and our chemistry over time just was, you know, incredible. I feel like we really started to bond during these press junkets and being together every day and making each other laugh and, and that kind of translated into the second film when we were filming.”
In this particular installment, Freddy gets to explore his awkward teenage side and find love along the way. When asked what are the character traits he found interesting in the second film, Grazer says, “I think it’s fun to see Freddy access a little bit of a more awkward, vulnerable flirtatious side, which we see with Rachel Zegler’s character (Anthea). It’s a cute little side to see and it's a fun little exploration of Freddy seeing them grow up and for sure.”
Adding to that, Asher says “I think what I loved about in the second film was, I feel like I got to play more of Zach. When I had my scenes with Jack. I got to have energetic scenes, I got to be more fun. The first time I played this kind of kid that's been going through a lot. So, I think that that was fun. I feel like I got to play more of Zach (in) this film and be fun and, and happy and make sure my family is intact and, you know, we're saving the day and doing that superhero stuff.”
Helen Mirren is the new addition to the cast and she plays the antagonist in the sequel. Jack Dylan Grazer had a ball of a time while sharing the screen with her. “One of the most exciting things about this movie, I think, to me, is that I have all the scenes with Helen Mirren. It'll really cement the fact that I actually worked with her and then I'll be able to see it and then all my friends will see it and then I can finally be cool to my actor friends and say, ‘You got to work with Steve Buscemi. You got to work with Colin Farrell. I don't care. I work with Helen Mirren. Suck on that, beat that. I'd like to see you try.’ That's what I'm most excited for.” Quipping about the fact that he needs to be accepted amongst his friends, he jokes, “I need to be accepted. I need to be seen.”
Asher Angel is most excited about the family scenes and action-packed sequences. “I think for the superheroes, I think those action-packed scenes where you know the family is saving the world together. I think that is really what I'm looking forward to in this film.”
The film stars returning cast members Zachary Levi as Shazam; Asher Angel as Billy Batson; Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman; Adam Brody as Super Hero Freddy; Ross Butler as Super Hero Eugene; Meagan Good as Super Hero Darla; D.J.
