My Demon Review: Song Kang and Kim Yoo Jung serve up a side of quirk and chaos in this fantasy rom-com

en Bollywood News My Demon Review: Song Kang and Kim Yoo Jung serve up a side of quirk and chaos in this fantasy rom-com

My Demon is a fantasy rom-com K-drama which premiered on Netflix on November 24, 2023.

K-dramaland is no stranger to supernatural creatures like a goblin, a grim reaper, or an angel inhabiting Earth and falling in love with a human. When there are stories galore about such tropes, how does one come up with a fresh take? The answer could be Netflix’s latest K-drama offering My Demon. The drama stars Kim Yoo Jung and Song Kang in the lead respectively as Do Do Hee, a no-nonsense heiress of the Mirae Group and Jung Gu Won, a demon who has lived off making contracts with humans in dire need of saving. My Demon premiered on November 24, 2023, and is set to air a total of 16 episodes. Mild spoilers ahead, if you haven’t watched the first two episodes!

My Demon tells the story of a chance encounter between Do Do Hee and Jung Gu Won. The two met by accident when Do Do Hee went to an incorrect address for a blind date set up by Ju Cheon Sok, aka Almighty Ju and also the chairperson of Mirae Group. Do Hee and Gu Won are both hot-headed individuals with sass of their own. Their first encounter, albeit by chance, is a total spitfire round. It would be but only fate that Gu Won would find Do Hee in need on the same day as their meeting. Gu Won saves her but he loses his powers to her. The small cross mark from his wrist is transferred onto Do Hee. Gu Won can control the powers only as long as he is holding Do Hee’s hand. The chemistry between Do Hee and Gu Won is quite remarkable to see. Neither can stand each other but have to bear the other for selfish gains. Gu Won is struggling to get his powers back and find out how his powers were transferred to Do Hee in the first place. Do Hee is worried about bringing her company back on top and also finding out who is out to kill her?

Three of sixteen episodes have aired. We see that Do Hee is adopted by Madam Ju after Do Hee’s parents pass away in an accident on Do Hee’s 11th birthday. Neither of Almighty Ju’s family members is happy with the addition. They have their agendas at play to get Do Hee out of the picture. We also see that Madam Ju carries a secret of her own which could potentially spoil her and Do Hee’s loving relationship. Lee Sang Yi stars as Ju Seok Hoon, the CEO of Mirae Investment. He is Almighty Ju’s nephew. His parents are hippies roaming around exotic places across the globe. He seems to be rather friendly with Do Hee, but as we saw in episode two, Seok Hoon might not be as friendly as he pretends to be.

One might say that the supporting cast of My Demon complements the male and female leads quite well. Where Do Hee is cold-hearted, her secretary is no less. Where Gu Won is quirky and funny without trying, his butler matches the vibe. The Park Pok Gyu joke landed quite well. The naivete and ignorance of the characters add to the hilarity. The wonders of language are immense!

The first three episodes have set the wheels in motion for the story to progress smoothly ahead. The supernatural element in the story adds to the fun of watching Do Hee and Gu Won fight and crib whenever they meet. We do know that the two end up in a contract marriage as the third episode ended with Do Hee proposing marriage to Gu Won. What will keep the interest up is how these two get out of that contract. Perhaps the audience might just get a will-they-won’t-they moment featuring Do Hee and Gu Won.

My Demon also plays on the sensitive angle of religion. In the first episode itself, we see a church assembly and prayers being offered. The writers have used mythological characters and references and also verses from the holy book to give an insight into Gu Won’s character. It will be interesting to see how they spawn a viable story from these bits. With just above an hour of runtime per episode, it does not feel very tiring to watch the drama. My Demon could just be the answer to your new weekend binge. A few recent dramas did not chalk up to the mark despite having a promising start. My Demon holds promise in its premise and hopefully, it will deliver too. Each of the three leads of My Demon returns to a Netflix show once again after a successful run of their previous stories. It won’t be wrong to hold onto hope that My Demon will be that K-drama that gives a sweet end to 2023 and ushers in the new year with a beautiful story in terms of K-dramas.
