Twenty years after the release of The Devil Wears Prada, its sequel is drawing intense attention, with the scale of public interest spilling onto the film’s set during production.
Actor Anne Hathaway recalled one such moment while filming, when an unexpected mishap unfolded in front of cameras and onlookers. “I was aware that I was falling, I was aware that I was being photographed,” she said, describing an incident where her heel broke mid-scene, causing her to fall down a few steps. Though she quickly recovered and reassured the crew, she admitted her immediate reaction was, “Oh no. I’m news.”
The heightened attention reflects the enduring popularity of the original film, which has remained a cultural touchstone since its release. Returning to the franchise after two decades, Meryl Streep spoke about the overwhelming atmosphere on set during the sequel’s shoot.
“Even though we were aware of the impact of the first film two decades ago, I think none of us were prepared for the ambush of both goodwill and avid attention that engulfed us,” Streep said. She added that the production required additional measures to manage crowds. “We needed police barriers and crowd control. Buses of fans turned up, and paparazzi swarmed and in one case kept jumping in front of the camera and the shot and got in a kerfuffle with crew! Annie kept her cool, but I was unnerved.”
The sequel reunites key members of the original team, including director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna, alongside returning cast members. It also introduces new additions such as Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu and B. J. Novak, among others.
Produced by Wendy Finerman, the film is set to release in theatres across India on May 1, marking a major return for one of Hollywood’s most recognisable titles.
