Governor Trailer: Manoj Bajpayee leads film based on India’s 1990 economic crisis

The makers of Governor have unveiled the official trailer of the upcoming historical drama starring Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role. Backed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah under the banner of Sunshine Pictures, the film is inspired by real events linked to India’s economic crisis in the 1990s.

The trailer presents a tense narrative set during a period when the country was reportedly facing severe financial instability and stood on the verge of economic collapse. Against this backdrop, the story focuses on an unsung figure whose decisions played a key role during the crisis. Manoj Bajpayee appears in the role of a Governor navigating political pressure, public unrest and economic uncertainty.

The film’s trailer builds on the teaser released earlier and offers a closer look at the socio-political atmosphere of the time. It highlights growing public anger over the state of the economy and the difficult measures taken to prevent further collapse. Alongside Manoj Bajpayee, Adah Sharma also features prominently in the trailer.

The title and first poster of Governor were initially unveiled on Manoj Bajpayee’s birthday, generating curiosity around the project. The film marks another collaboration from the team behind The Kerala Story and The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond.

Directed by noted Marathi filmmaker Chinmay Mandlekar, Governor aims to bring lesser-known aspects of India’s economic history to mainstream audiences. The makers also recently organised a special trailer screening for young viewers, followed by an interaction session with the cast and creators discussing the historical backdrop of the film.

The film has been written by Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat, Ravi Asrani and Vipul Amrutlal Shah. It is co-produced by Aashin A. Shah. The project also features music composed by Amit Trivedi, while lyrics have been penned by Javed Akhtar.

Positioned as a modern history drama, Governor attempts to revisit a significant chapter from India’s past through a fictionalised narrative rooted in real events. It is scheduled to release in theatres on June 12, 2026.
