One of India’s most iconic early-2000s pop acts, VIVA, is officially making a digital comeback. After being largely unavailable across streaming platforms for years, the group’s music catalogue has now returned online through KaanPhod and other major music OTT platforms in collaboration with JioStar.
For many millennials, VIVA was one of the defining faces of India’s independent pop music boom in the early 2000s. Known as India’s first all-girl pop band, the group played a major role in bringing female-led mainstream pop music into public consciousness at a time when the Indian music industry was largely dominated by film soundtracks.
As music consumption gradually shifted from television and CDs to digital streaming platforms over the years, much of VIVA’s catalogue slowly disappeared from public access. The restoration and re-release of the music now marks a significant moment for fans who grew up listening to the group’s songs during the peak of India’s Indi-pop era.
Speaking about the comeback, Anushka Manchanda shared, “VIVA represents a powerful moment in time that laid the foundation for us to be strong, independent women. We are humbled and grateful for the love we have continued to receive over the last two decades, and so this moment feels all the more magical as it comes together!” Singer Neha Bhasin also reflected on the emotional connection audiences continue to share with the band’s music. “VIVA was never just a band, it became a feeling, a memory and an entire era for us and for a generation that grew up with our music,” she said.
Meanwhile, Pratichee Mohapatra described the return of the music catalogue as both nostalgic and emotional. “Seeing the music return after all these years feels emotional, nostalgic and a little surreal,” she shared. Adding to the sentiment, Mahua Kamat said, “The music of VIVA is finally returning to where it has always belonged with the listeners who have carried these songs in their hearts for all these years.”
The return of VIVA’s catalogue comes at a time when younger audiences are increasingly rediscovering early-2000s music, fashion, and pop culture online. Beyond their music, the group had also become symbolic of individuality, self-expression, and female representation during a period when such voices were still rare in mainstream Indian pop culture.
