Vikrant Massey on 12th Fail, National Award glory and a phase that changed his career: “I didn’t expect this when 12th Fail had released”

Vikrant Massey continues to establish himself as one of the most compelling and dependable actors of his generation, balancing authenticity with box office success. Although 12th Fail released in the latter half of 2023, the film gathered significant momentum through 2024, becoming a major talking point within the industry. Massey’s transformative portrayal ultimately earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor in 2025, marking a defining milestone in his career.

Building on that success, Massey followed up with Sector 36, where he delivered a gripping performance as a serial killer. The role further strengthened his reputation for taking on intense, real-life-inspired characters and showcased his willingness to explore darker, more complex narratives. His performances across both films were recognised with prestigious honours, including the Filmfare Award and the National Award for 12th Fail.

When asked whether 2024 could be considered “his year,” Massey responded with characteristic humility, reflecting on the timing of 12th Fail’s release and its unexpected box office journey.

“I'm so grateful to be honest,” he shared. “Honestly, I didn't expect this when 12th Fail had released. It released in the latter half of the year. And by the time the film caught up with public, a new year had started. We were in early 2024. And you're very kind to say that 2024 was my year. But there were a lot of other phenomenal films that came out in 2023. I think it was one of the greatest years for Hindi cinema.”

He further spoke about the emotional significance of receiving recognition alongside strong commercial performance. “Amongst all these phenomenal films to be recognized by the reputed award bodies. I think it was a wonderful feeling. And simultaneously, it also happened that the film did really well at the box office. I'm really grateful. I still look back at the year gone by very fondly, very happy.”

Capping an extraordinary phase in his career, Massey’s National Film Award win for 12th Fail cemented his standing as a powerhouse performer in Hindi cinema. Looking ahead, he is set to expand his global footprint with the international thriller White, in which he steps into the role of spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, marking another ambitious chapter in his evolving body of work.
