The autograph you treasure may NOT be a star’s official signature – In Bollywood, even a signature has a double role

en Bollywood News The autograph you treasure may NOT be a star’s official signature – In Bollywood, even a signature has a double role

In Bollywood, fans are used to seeing two versions of a star. There is the larger-than-life version on the big screen, and then there is the real person behind the camera. But what many fans may not know is that for several film celebrities, even their signature has two versions.

Yes, you read that right. The signature that fans proudly collect on posters, photographs, diaries, phone covers, boarding passes and even random tissue papers is often not the same signature a celebrity uses for banking, legal documents or financial paperwork.

For the fan, an autograph is emotion. For the star, it is often performance, speed, habit and safety rolled into one.

Think about it. A celebrity standing outside an airport, a film event, a theatre or a hotel lobby is not signing one carefully examined document. He or she is usually surrounded by excited fans, flashing cameras, security guards, selfie requests and chaos. In that moment, the autograph has to be quick, stylish and recognizable. It may be a first name, a short version of the name, a dramatic loop, a heart, a smiley, a lucky flourish or a scribble that fans can instantly identify.

But the signature used for banking and financial purposes is a completely different matter. That one needs to be consistent, private and protected. It appears on cheques, contracts, property documents, endorsement papers, production agreements, tax related paperwork and other sensitive material. It is not meant to become a viral Instagram reel or a collectible on Amazon.

This is why many stars, like several public figures around the world, prefer to keep their official signature away from public circulation. Their autograph is for love. Their banking signature is for life.

And in a country like India, where film stars enjoy almost mythological fan-following, the distinction becomes even more important. Fans do not just want a photograph with their favourite actor. They want proof of the encounter. An autograph becomes a memory, a souvenir, a personal treasure. For a Shah Rukh Khan fan, a Salman Khan fan, a Deepika Padukone fan or a Ranbir Kapoor fan, that one rushed scribble can become a lifetime keepsake.

But for celebrities, the same gesture has to be handled with care. If a star’s actual official signature becomes too widely available, it can create unnecessary risk. Nobody is saying every autograph will be misused, but why make private identity easier to copy in an age where screenshots, scans and digital manipulation travel faster than gossip?

That is why the autograph often becomes a public facing brand mark. It is less like a bank signature and more like a logo. It is stylish, repeatable and fan friendly. Some stars may sign only their first name. Some may use initials. Some may add a personal flourish. Some may develop a completely different fan signature over the years because signing hundreds of autographs in public demands speed more than perfection.

The autograph that fans call a star’s signature may actually be the least official version of the star’s signature. It is the filmi version. The one meant to be photographed, framed and cherished. The real official signature, meanwhile, quietly lives in bank records, legal files and private paperwork, far away from screaming fans and paparazzi lenses.

This also explains why some celebrities appear inconsistent while signing for fans. At one event, the autograph may look elaborate. At another, it may look like a hurried line. At the airport, it may be just initials. During a relaxed fan interaction, it may be more readable. That does not always mean the star is careless. It simply means an autograph is not always treated with the same rigidity as an official signature.

A senior trade source on condition of anonymity offered a slightly different perspective, “It is not always that a celebrity has two completely different signatures. But the purpose is clear. The public autograph is for emotion, while the private signature is for serious paperwork.”

For fans, this should not reduce the value of an autograph. If anything, it makes it more interesting. An autograph is not valuable because it matches a bank record. It is valuable because the star wrote it for you, in that moment, as a tiny personal connection between fame and fandom.

The fun part is that Bollywood has always been built on dual identities. Screen name and real name. Public image and private personality. Reel romance and real relationships. Star persona and human vulnerability. The two signature habit fits beautifully into this world. One signature belongs to the fan universe. The other belongs to the serious world of banks, lawyers, producers and accountants.

So the next time a fan gets an autograph from a Bollywood celebrity, they may be holding something that is not the star’s official financial signature, but something more cinematic in its own way; a public stamp of stardom.

Because in Bollywood, even a signature can have a double role. One signs cheques. The other signs memories.
