Sushmita Sen reveals how she ventured into the world of modelling; says, it’s “all thanks to her mother”

Sushmita Sen has over the year been a rather prominent figure in the Indian film and modelling industry. Since her win at Miss Indian and Miss Universe to her Bollywood debut in 1996, Sen still continues to hold the audiences’ attention. Recently, in a conversation with Twinkle Khanna for Tweak India's The Icons, the model turned actress, Sushmita Sen opened up about her life. In fact, Sen shared details about how she actually got into modelling and how her dream came true.

Speaking about the same Sushmita says, “Once, I was out at a nightclub partying with friends, while my father knows that I've gone to Mona my friend's house to study and at this party gentleman walks up to me and says, ‘I think you should enter Miss India. They are just now confirming the names’. Ek toh, it’s a nightclub, oopar se Miss India? You want me to go? So I go back to my friends and I say he’s drunk. And you have to save me from this person. But, a little later he comes back again. This time he gives us his business card and that was Mr. Ranjan Bakshi from The Times of India. And then he said, ‘I expect to see you tomorrow young lady’ and he leaves. So now two problems. First people at home did not know where I really was, and then this business card, how do I explain it? Second, it was a beauty pageant, my father will kill me because I am a Bengali girl heading to become an IAS officer. That's his dream, toh kya kare?”

Continuing her tale, of how she convinced her parents Sushmita adds, “Anyway, mumma ko thodasa bribe kia, thoda samjaya ki thoda jhoot bole, and then this happened, so my mom said, ‘very good. Go tomorrow apply’. I said well, we don't have the money you know this takes a lot of money to do dresses and I don't think Baba will agree. ‘We will worry about that later. Now you go first apply’, is what she said. So I went the next day Times of India. I was filling out my name, and some people there were like ‘arrey you are very brave, a lot of girls have removed their names, because Aishwariya Rai is entering this year. I was like who is that? And they were like, (from the) Pepsi ad, I'm like, please return my form. I will think about it and I will see you tomorrow. And that form and I went back home, where my mother for two and a half days didn't speak to me. She says to me, life mein everything on a platter chahiye? If she's real competition then you go lose to her no. Two and a half days later without breakfast in my tummy to show her that fine, I can also get upset. I went to Times of India and I applied and that I remember being the one most important decision of my life. That changed everything. Thanks to her, 110% thanks to her!”

On the work front, Sushmita who is best-known for movies like Biwi No 1, Do Knot Disturb, Main Hoon Na, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya and Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge. She made her acting comeback with the International Emmy-nominated series Aarya.
