Sunny Deol opens up about being dyslexic; says, “People would think yeh duffer aadmi hai”

The year has proven to be a triumphant one for Bollywood actor Sunny Deol, who made a powerful return to the silver screen with the highly successful Gadar 2, emerging as one of the year's blockbuster hits.

In a recent conversation with Bombay Times, Sunny Deol opened up about a personal aspect of his life, revealing that he is dyslexic. The actor shared insights into his unique approach to preparing for roles, shedding light on the challenges he faces due to his condition. Sunny disclosed that, given his dyslexia, he receives his dialogue in Hindi and meticulously reads them multiple times before delivering them in front of the camera.

Discussing his perspective on character research, Sunny expressed his scepticism towards the extensive preparation that some actors undertake. He referenced the dedication of actors from the past, including his father Dharmendra, who would work tirelessly on multiple shifts and deliver outstanding performances without the need for extensive research.

Sunny emphasized, “All this research actors do, I find all this gibberish. Considering this (the time spent doing it), all our films should have been great. Back then, what research did actors do… But they still played their characters beautifully. Characters were based on real life and real emotions.”

He further added, “If you are playing a biographical character, then it is different, but even then, in a film like Border, where I played Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, I didn’t imitate him. I took the soul of the character and did it in my own way. It’s not like I researched ki woh kaise chalta tha, kya karta tha. When I am doing a film, I don’t even have the dialogues with me. That is another thing – I am dyslexic, so I can’t read and write properly, and that has been my problem since childhood. Earlier, we didn’t know what it was, and people would think yeh duffer aadmi hai. I always get my dialogue in Hindi, and I take my time to read it. I read them many times and make them my own. That is my prep for the part.”

On the work front, Deol is currently enjoying the success of his latest film, Gadar 2, which has been a box office hit. The actor is also working on several other projects. Sunny is said to start shooting for Border 2 in the second half of 2024. Sunny will be reportedly accompanied by Ayushmann Khurrana, Ammy Virk, and Ahan Shetty in the movie. The name of the director of Border 2 has been kept under wraps for now.
