At a time when the country has plunged into an unprecedented religiosity, with rituals and celebrations forming the crux of our lifestyle, Sudipto Sen’s Charak aims to be a jolting reminder of how extreme faith is a first cousin to blind faith.
Interestingly, Charak comes a week after The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond, the film Sen has chosen not to direct after the rippling success of the first film.
Said Sudipto Sen, “Why are you surprised? I had to tell you the story of the Kerala I saw. I did. Repeat nahin karna tha khud ko. I have hundreds of stories to tell... You saw Bastar. On March 6 Charak is coming. Two more of my productions will come by the end of the year.”
Explaining the relevance of Charak, Sen said, “Charak is a very popular festivity in Bengal, Assam, Odhisa... Jharkhand areas. We call it Fair of Faith. And my film is a debate between Faith and Science, Faith and Humanity, Faith and Sanity.”
The film was stuck with the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) for two and a half months.
Recalling the fight to get his film cleared, Sudipto said, “Finally, the Review Committee allowed the film with few cuts, not much. Their first reaction was like, ‘This film is against Sadhu-Sant, Indian ethos’... Later they changed their mind. One of the senior EC members said, ‘This is one of the most sensible movies I saw in many years’.”
