At the 2026 Met Gala, billionaire philanthropist Sudha Reddy made a striking return to the red carpet, presenting a look that combined scale with cultural storytelling. Dressed in a custom creation by Manish Malhotra and styled by Mariel Haenn, Reddy’s ensemble, titled ‘The Tree of Life’, drew from centuries-old Indian textile traditions while interpreting them through a contemporary couture lens.

Rooted in the Machilipatnam style of Kalamkari, the look revisited one of India’s oldest art forms, known for its intricate, hand-painted depictions of mythology and nature. Central to the design was the Tree of Life motif, symbolising balance and interconnectedness, which served as the conceptual anchor of the ensemble. Created over 3,459 hours by more than 90 artisans, the outfit brought together techniques such as zardozi, marodi, resham, and detailed metalwork.
The structured silhouette featured a sculpted corset in a deep sapphire tone, layered with antique gold zari embroidery across velvet, silk, and tulle. A seven-metre trail added scale to the look, with peacock motifs and intricate detailing enhancing its visual impact. A sheer embroidered cape introduced a softer contrast, while a sculptural metal installation at the back—crafted in brass, copper, and silver—featured motifs including Kalpavriksha, Surya, Chandra, and regional symbols like the Palapitta and Jammi Chettu, reflecting Reddy’s connection to Telangana.

Her jewellery, drawn from her personal collection and reportedly valued at $15 million, complemented the monochromatic palette. The highlight was a Victorian-finish necklace centred around a 550-carat tanzanite, paired with statement diamond rings. A couture clutch by Manish Malhotra and a Dolce & Gabbana minaudière added finishing touches to the ensemble.
The look was completed with understated beauty choices—soft contouring, smoky eyes, and a sleek ponytail—allowing the craftsmanship to remain the focal point.
Speaking about the inspiration, Sudha Reddy shared, "Hyderabad is my foundation and this ensemble is a translation of that cultural identity into a language that is both global and deeply personal. Indian craftsmanship isn't a legacy confined to history but a living, breathing art form. It was vital to demonstrate that these ancient techniques possess the structural integrity and aesthetic power to lead the global fashion dialogue. The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Telangana recently emphasized that South Indian crafts and textiles deserve sustained global visibility, even envisioning their presence at platforms like London and Paris Fashion Week. That became my singular brief to the team-to take the richness of South Indian textile heritage to an international stage. New York was our starting point."
Manish Malhotra added, "Fashion, for me, has always been about the emotion behind the image. With 'The Tree of Life,' we wanted to create something that carries memory and the soul of the craft. It is not merely worn, it is experienced."

Mariel Haenn said, "Working with Sudha Reddy and Manish Malhotra on 'The Tree of Life' was an exercise in pushing the boundaries of what red-carpet fashion can be. Our goal was to treat this ensemble as a piece of high-concept art by projecting the grandeur of Indian heritage through a cinematic contemporary lens. My approach to styling has always been about finding the narrative thread that connects a person to their clothes. With Sudha Reddy, that thread is her incredible commitment to her hometown and the storytelling of her culture."
With this appearance, Sudha Reddy once again positioned Indian craftsmanship within a global conversation, using couture as a medium to highlight regional identity and traditional artistry on one of fashion’s most-watched platforms.
