Sooraj Barjatya reveals that Shah Rukh Khan was initially considered for Saif Ali Khan’s role in Hum Saath Saath Hain : Bollywood News

Filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya recently revealed that he was once in conversation with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan for a role in Hum Saath Saath Hain. In a chat with Bollywood Bubble, the Maine Pyar Kiya director shared that SRK was considered for the role that was ultimately played by Saif Ali Khan in the 1999 family drama.

The role that could have been SRK’s
Speaking about his discussions with SRK, Sooraj Barjatya said, “Many years ago, for Hum Saath Saath Hain… We were talking about Saif’s role. But this was a long time ago.” While it remains unclear if Salman Khan and SRK would have shared screen space in the film, it is an interesting revelation given that Salman had already cemented his identity as Rajshri Productions’ ‘Prem’ by then.

Saif Ali Khan’s nervousness during the shoot
While Saif Ali Khan eventually took on the role, Barjatya recalled that the actor was extremely nervous during the filming of Hum Saath Saath Hain. “When films don’t work, actors are a little (shaken), so he would be nervous and had such a big part for the first time, that too opposite such big actors.” Barjatya revealed that Saif worked extra hard and memorized all his lines meticulously, but the pressure affected his performance. The director shared that Saif’s nervous energy was especially evident while shooting the song ‘Suno Ji Dulhan.’

Amrita Singh’s advice for Saif
The filmmaker also revealed an amusing incident regarding Saif’s struggle with nervousness. “I asked Amrita, his wife, why is he not able to do it? She said, ‘He doesn’t sleep, keeps looking at the mirror and thinking that this is how he would do it.’” Concerned about his actor’s well-being, Barjatya jokingly advised Amrita to give him medicine so that he could rest properly.

A changed man on set
After following Barjatya’s advice, Saif Ali Khan returned to the set the next day feeling refreshed and delivered the shot in just one take. The director concluded by saying that despite his initial anxiety, Saif gave an excellent performance in the film, which went on to become a box-office success and a fan favorite.
