How does it feel to be back on the big screen after three years?
I am feeling nervous and excited. I feel like mera debut ho raha hai (laughs)! My fingers and toes both are crossed. I hope people like the film and my work.

After OK Jaanu (2017), you are back in this romcom space. How was your experience?
I feel that romcoms are one of the easiest to watch but one of the most difficult to make. I am a romcom buff. I am a fan of the romcoms made by Yash Raj Films (YRF) like Hum Tum (2004), and also Hollywood films like Pretty Woman (1990), Notting Hill (1999) etc. More than even being a part of a film of this genre, the character that I am playing in this film is so different. You have seen a glimpse of it in the trailer when she tells Ranbir’s character, ‘Don’t worry. Main daaru pila ke faayda nahin uthaungi’. She’s on a front foot and as an actor, it was refreshing to essay such a character. She takes charge and she knows what she wants. And she’ll spell it out. Woh aaj ki ladki hai. It’s so different from the kind of roles that I have done. Also, it’s so different about the impression that people have of me. As an actor, I am excited, and I hope people like this avatar.

Luv Ranjan’s films are set in a different world. How was it for you to be directed by him?
Yes, unki duniya bahut alag aur typical hai. His dialogues are also like a character in his films. People easily connect with it. So, for me, it was like the dialogues are also my co-star! And he’s so particular about how you say the dialogue, where you take a pause etc. Initially, I would be like, ‘Toh kya hua agar maine ek shabd yahan se wahan bol diya?’ In my earlier films, I have been allowed to improvise and change the pause. After all, sometimes, you are in a certain state and hence, dialogue delivery thodi alag ho jaati hai. What’s important is that you need to convey appropriately. However, on the sets of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, Luv sir would tell me, ‘Retake lete hai. Ek shabd alag bola aapne’. I would be puzzled. Then he’d explain to me, ‘Yeh ek word change kar diya tha’. I would argue, ‘Lekin meaning toh same hai’. He’d reply, ‘Meaning badal jaata hai. Aapne jo shabd use kiyausse dusra meaning nikalta hai’. That’s not all. He’d also say, ‘Aapne yahan pe pause nahin, wahan pe liya. Toh isse woh meaning nikal jaata hai’. I would be speechless! As an actor, it was an interesting experience though it was challenging.

It might seem easy. On screen, the mood might seem peppy and pleasant. So, one might assume that the scene must have been filmed effortlessly. Aisa nahin hai. Luv sir apne actors ko poori tarike se nichodte hai (smiles)!

It’s the age of crossovers and franchises. Your character in Aashiqui 2 (2013), Aarohi, is alone after her partner ends his life. Meanwhile, Ranbir’s character, Jordan, in Rockstar (2011), is also alone after the demise of her loved one. Both are musically inclined. Can we expect a crossover here?
(Laughs) Kya imagination hai aapka! Also, imagine Imtiaz Ali and Mohit Suri co-directing! They should consider this idea. But I don’t know if Aarohi would ever love again. She’s Shirke in the end. But Good idea. Nice try! (laughs)

Aashiqui 2 will celebrate 10 years in April. How did your life change after this film?
It does not feel like it’s a decade. Wherever I go, people still call me Aarohi. It’s amazing to see the impact that film has had. It’s still fresh. I have to tell people now that mujhe Aarohi nahinJhoothi bulao! By the way, I have a very hatke name for my character!

Your father Shakti Kapoor’s predictions are bang on. He had predicted Rs. 100 crores for Aashiqui 2. How often do you take his advice?
He is my father, and he has seen my most stubborn side. Unhone mujhe patiently jhela hai! I fight when we have a difference of opinions. But then when I am sitting alone in my room, I wonder ‘Yes, he’s my father but do you also know who he is? What work he has done and what versatility he has?’ He humbles me as a person. I overthink a lot. He tells me, ‘Cheezon ko complicate mat karo’. My most real self comes in front of my father which means I fight with him also! The same also goes for my mother. But as they say, aap jiske saath zyada jagda karte ho, you have the most fun with that person and are also closest to him.

He did the most fun thumkas in the reel which you shared recently…
Because of me, we had to do so many retakes! Main bahut zyada kharab thi. His first and last takes were superb. I also thought, ‘Main video mein se khud ko kaat du kya?’! And that’s what I should have done – put only his thumkas!

Talking of Instagram, you are the third most followed Indian personality on the platform. Your fan following is insane. How does it feel, and does it hit you that your following is more than some of the biggest stars in this country?
It’s all because of them (my fans). It’s they who have made me and inspired me to be more interactive. I didn’t have a release for three years. Yet, they were supporting me. Whether or not my films, they are also so loving and supportive. Pyaar mile ja raha hai and I don’t know the reason behind it. Hence, I became more active on Instagram. It’s not possible to meet each and every fan. Hence, I reply to comments and check my DMs. I actually take out a lot of my time to engage with my followers. This is very important to me. I handle the account myself. The only person who has the password to my Instagram handle is me!

Bahut mazaa aata hai. Kya comments maarte hai log! It’s the least I can do. I get overwhelmed too. Some of them did complain why I was not seen in a film since three years. I hope they enjoy my performance in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar.

I feel like the luckiest girl to get this kind of love. I want to tell all of them that I love them so much that words cannot express. I hope I make coming them proud!

Your fan clubs are fiercely loyal towards you…
These fan club members know when I am nervous or upset or happy. I don’t know how. They’ll pick a picture of mine and ask me, ‘Shraddhu or Shraddy, are you okay?’. I am stunned. Aap itna observe kar rahe ho kisi ko!

It’s a huge, huge validation. You feel like kuch toh sahi kar rahi hoon main (laughs)! It gives me confidence to like step out in my kolhapuri chappals (laughs)!

There’s a lot of sympathy for your character Aarohi in Aashiqui 2 and Aisha in Ek Villain. Hence, your fan clubs are not just ready to see you in a grey zone in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar. They love you too much. Your thoughts?
(Laughs) I don’t know how and where this love comes from. I am not able to sit and analyse. It makes me take a flight and interact with each and every fan. I want to thank them in person and gift each of them a box of jalebi! I wish it was possible to do that.

The success of Pathaan and Drishyam 2 has proved that you need to over-promote to get people to cinemas. Are you happy people are looking forward to Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar without exhausting yourself?
Ultimately, we’ll only know when the film is released. Then people will have their own reasons why it worked or didn’t work and that ‘iss film mein yeh hua isliye chali’ ya ‘yeh nahin hua isliye nahin chali’. (As for Pathaan), I mean Shah Rukh Khan’s euphoria is on another level. You can see that. He also came after more than 4 years. You don’t know what makes people go into the theatres – is it the love or is it due to the film? It’s difficult to pinpoint. Nothing can beat the decision of the audience. They are the ultimate judges.

Were you and Ranbir Kapoor offered any film before Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar?
No, nothing was offered to us. I have always admired him as an actor. After his debut film Saawariya (2007), I thought, ‘He’s really good in the first film. Let’s see him in his next film’ (laughs)! Then came Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008). I now thought, ‘Ok, he’s damn good in this film. Let’s see how he is in his next film!’ His third film was Wake Up Sid (2009). I saw the film and I was like, ‘Oh My God’! Ever since I have had the desire to work with him as he’s a great actor. It’s amazing we collaborated that too in this film, that too helmed by a maker like Luv Ranjan. All these factors excited me to be a part of this film.

It’s your birthday on March 3. What are your plans?
Promotions (laughs)!

Won’t you get a break from promotions on your special day?
No (smiles). Main khushi khushi promote kar rahi hoon! I missed talking to you guys (journalists).

We would love to see you sooner on the big screen after Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar
Yes. Stree 2 is hopefully going on floors very, very soon.

It would have been fun to see you and Ranbir Kapoor promote the film together…
That’s Luv Ranjan’s strategy. Hopefully, if the film does well, you guys will see us promoting the film together!

Though you were away for three years, did the insane response to your appearance in ‘Thumkeshwari’ song in Bhediya give you the much-needed validation?
I was so shocked by that reaction. I was overwhelmed and humbled. At the same time, I felt high to see that people are excited about Stree. Imagine, log ek gaane se itne excited ho gaye. And it was Amar Kaushik’s idea that I’ll come in a song and that I have to give the Stree look. This is the first time a crossover happened in a song. Amar Kaushik is a genius for thinking like this.
