Shoojit Sircar reveals he shot an alternate ending for Piku on Irrfan Khan’s insistence: “Irrfan insisted on going inside Deepika Padukone’s house…”

April 29, 2026, marked the sixth death anniversary of Irrfan Khan. On this occasion, a screening of A Story That Refused To Die was held at Mumbai's Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre. The 47-minute-long documentary threw light on the making of Irrfan's acclaimed film, Paan Singh Tomar (2012). After the screening, noted journalist Saurabh Dwivedi had a conversation with Paan Singh Tomar's director, Tigmanshu Dhulia, and Irrfan's other close filmmaker friend, Vishal Bhardwaj. Shoojit Sircar was also present in the audience and was asked to come on stage to share his memories of working with the late actor.

Shoojit Sircar began by saying, “I was shooting Piku (2015). Irrfan had a romantic side and so I’ll talk about it.” Then he looked at Irrfan’s wife, Sutapa Sikdar, and joked, “Don’t mind, Sutapa!”

Shoojit then revealed, “I was shooting the last sequence of Piku where Rana (Irrfan Khan) and Piku (Deepika Padukone) were playing badminton outside the house. I had shouted ‘Cut’. Irrfan approached me and said he wanted to talk. He asked me, ‘Mereko andar nahin jaana hai?’. I replied, ‘Why would you go inside the house?’. Meanwhile, no one knew exactly how Piku was going to end. He insisted, ‘Shoojit da, I should go inside. Aapne toh kaha tha ki yeh ek romantic film hai’!”

The audience laughed as Shoojit Sircar continued, “I tried to reason, but he kept insisting, ‘Mere ko andar jaane do. The house help comes. She goes inside, so does Piku and I’ll also follow’. I gave in and told him that I’ll shoot it as an option. He suggested, ‘Yeh tum zaroor rakhna final edit mein’. I shot it, but of course, I didn’t keep it in the end. I showed him (and he understood my point of view). Very few people know about it.”
