Author and columnist Shobhaa De has weighed in on the conversation surrounding Dhurandhar, questioning what she described as excessive hype around Akshaye Khanna’s performance in the film.
Speaking on a podcast, De said, “What was created around the impression that Akshaye is the bigger star and that he alone stood out… that, to me, was another manipulative aspect.” She was referring to the wave of praise that followed Khanna’s performance, particularly the attention around a viral dance sequence that many viewers called a standout moment. Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar has performed strongly at the box office and generated significant online chatter. While acknowledging the film’s popularity, De appeared critical of how narratives around individual performances were being shaped.
She also addressed comments made by Hrithik Roshan, who had publicly reacted to the film’s political undertones. Questioning the focus on his remarks, De said, “Nobody asked Hrithik Roshan whether he agreed with the politics of the film. He could have simply said he liked it but he chose to go further.”
Despite her criticism of the promotional buzz, De did not dismiss the film outright, instead suggesting that discussions around cinema often become amplified in ways that serve publicity cycles. Dhurandhar, which also features Ranveer Singh, continues to draw audience attention, but De’s remarks have added another layer to the conversation , one about how acclaim, criticism and celebrity commentary intersect in today’s film culture.
