Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty recently opened-up about her career in the film industry, shedding light on the challenges she faced and the roles she was often typecast into. The actor, who made her cinematic debut in 1993 with Baazigar, expressed her views in a candid interview, sharing her perspective on her journey. In her conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Shilpa Shetty spoke about her perceived lack of recognition as an actor in the industry. She revealed that throughout her career, she was frequently typecast into glamorous roles, which, although a niche she could excel in, limited her opportunities to showcase her full range as an actor.
Shilpa said, “I never got the tag of an actor. I always got relegated or rather typecast into being just a glamorous actor, which is also a great niche to have because today I can proudly say that I can do this (pointing at the poster of her film Sukhee), but can you become glamorous? I can say proudly that I picked from whatever was offered to me and I survived.”
Shilpa Shetty revealed that she often found herself excluded from movies produced by major banners. Instead, she emphasized that her career thrived through her involvement in smaller films alongside prominent actors. She stated, “I have had a long career with so many lows that I used to wonder, ‘Why didn’t I get offered this role or why was I never offered a film with big banners?’ Whatever I have achieved is by working in small films with big actors. I did small characters and no matter whether my films worked or not, all my songs were hits. I am surviving because of my songs.”
Reflecting on her career's ups and downs, Shilpa Shetty acknowledged that there were instances in the 90s when she faced payment disputes with film producers, who cited losses incurred by their projects. “There are films of the 90s which I worked in, and the producers would say, ‘Oh, we incurred losses.’ So, I didn’t get the remaining fees also. That time was very different,” said the actress.
Meanwhile, Shilpa will be next seen in film Sukhee. It is an upcoming Hindi movie scheduled to be released on September 22, 2023. The movie is directed by Sonal Joshi and will feature Shilpa Shetty, Amit Sadh, Kusha Kapila and Pavleen Gujral as lead characters. Shilpa also has web-series Indian Police force starring alongside Sidharth Malhotra and Vivek Oberoi, directed by Rohit Shetty in pipeline.
