Every film is launched with a lot of fanfare in the hope that it will soon be released to the public and make the makers laugh all the way to the bank. Sadly, some films never see the light of day and fail to get a timely release due to various reasons. They remain in cans for years, sometimes even decades, and the chances of the public ever seeing them are remote. However, Saugaat seems to be an exception. Starring the late actor Shashi Kapoor and the talented Shabana Azmi, the film is finally out on satellite and digital.
Saugaat first had its direct-to-TV premiere on February 6 this year on Zee Classic. On March 17, the film finally premiered on YouTube. Interestingly, the retro flick has been uploaded in 4K on the YouTube channel ‘Grand Master Movies’. The promotional asset released by Zee Classic mentions that the film was made in 1986. In other words, Saugaat has finally got a release after nearly 40 years.

Saugaat is the tenth film featuring Shashi Kapoor and Shabana Azmi together. Their other nine films are Fakira (1976), Chor Sipahee (1977), Hira Aur Patthar (1977), Atithee (1978), Junoon (1979), Yaadon Ki Zanjeer (1984), Oonch Neech Beech (1989), In Custody (1993) and Side Streets (1998).
Interestingly, Shabana Azmi plays a double role in Saugaat. It is only the second time in her career that she has played a double role, the first being in Devata (1978).
Besides Shashi Kapoor and Shabana Azmi, Saugaat also stars Danny Denzongpa, Asrani, Kader Khan and Madan Puri. It was directed by Prayag Raaj, produced by D. Jayaraman, and its songs were composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Anuradha Paudwal, Chandrani Mukherjee and the ‘immortal’ Mohammed Rafi, as mentioned in the end credits.
