In an episode of The Filmy Hustle, hosted by distributor-exhibitor Akshaye Rathi, Mandavi Sharma of Tree-Shul Media Solutions and Gautam Thakker of Everymedia shared their behind-the-scenes experiences in the world of content marketing. Mandavi, who has worked as Shah Rukh Khan’s publicist, opened up about a shocking incident during the birth of his third child, AbRam, in 2013. It was reported that SRK and wife Gauri Khan opted for a sex determination test, which is illegal, before AbRam’s birth through surrogacy. Following the report, an inquiry was conducted by the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) and the civic body cleared Shah Rukh and Gauri of any wrongdoing.

Mandavi Sharma said, “While working with SRK, we have had enough incidents where we could have immediately rebutted a lot of things or come up with a statement that ‘The news being carried is false’. But he always said, ‘(Let's wait for the) right time and let’s see the limits’, that is, at what point does ethics outweigh the urge to sell news?”

She continued, “During AbRam’s birth, many publications carried whatever information they wanted to carry…that a sex determination test was undertaken. Nobody knows on what basis that news was carried. A newspaper published the news with an anonymous byline and they went on and on about it. The funny thing is, when we came out with a statement, the journalists, who wrote those stories, did not even apologize.”

More than a year after this episode, Shah Rukh Khan opened up on this false reportage and also revealed that AbRam was born prematurely. He told PTI in August 2014, “I did not like the fact that the media spoke about the surrogacy. I hate it. They said I had a sex determination test, which was rubbish. I am too educated to be indulging in this nonsense. He was suffering...He was ill and people were talking about sex determination just because he was the child of a famous movie star.”
