A significant trend that began post-pandemic is re-releasing classics and old favourites. It began as an experiment and exhibitors were surprised as viewers turned up in large numbers even though the flicks were easily available online and had premiered countless times on television. Last year, in Valentine’s week, Jab We Met (2007) was a surprise success as it collected more than the evergreen classic, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). This year, during the season of love, both Jab We Met and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge once again performed well. However, the film that beat both of them was Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013).
Between February 9 and February 15, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani collected Rs. 28.50 lakhs. The demand was so strong that exhibitors were compelled to increase its shows. PVR Juhu in Mumbai, for instance, played 5 shows of the Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone starrer on February 15, which speaks volumes of the craze that the film continues to have among moviegoers.
Jab We Met, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan, meanwhile, came a close second, collecting Rs. 27.75 lakhs. The collections are lesser than what it collected last year at this time. Nevertheless, for a re-release and the showcasing it got, the numbers are impressive.
Meanwhile, Yash Raj Films (YRF) re-released several of their memorable films as part of the ‘YRF Nostalgia Film Festival’. Bollywood Hungama accessed the data of the collections from the time the festival began, that is, January 19, till February 15. It has come to light that the film that performed the best was Veer-Zaara (2004), which re-released on February 2. The Shah Rukh Khan-Preity Zinta-Rani Mukerji starrer love saga collected Rs. 17.05 lakhs. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, too, had a healthy run, collecting Rs. 17.85 lakhs.
Though Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge collected more than Veer-Zaara, the latter had higher footfalls (15,964) than the former (15,474). An industry insider remarked, “Veer-Zaara’s tickets were probably priced lower than that of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and hence, the low collections despite more tickets sold.”
Mohabbatein (2000) was another surprise performer as it collected Rs. 14.69 lakhs. Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) came next, collecting Rs. 13.09 lakhs followed by Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, which earned Rs. 5.20 lakhs. Chak De India (2007) and Darr (1993) took the last two slots.
An industry insider quipped, “Films like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Veer-Zaara, Mohabbatein and Dil To Pagal Hai have a strong recall value. What also worked in their favour is that these films had never been re-released in cinemas. There’s a chunk of moviegoers who were either too young or were not born at all when these films originally arrived in cinemas. Jab We Met and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, meanwhile, are eternal classics and will always draw audiences, come what may.”
