Sargun Mehta opens up on the connection between actors and luxurious designer clothes; says, “It’s what they do on-screen that defines them, not what they wear”

From their red carpet to promotions and even the airport looks these days, actors are expected to be dressed in the best of designer and high-fashion outfits. But Cuttputlli actress Sargun Mehta doesn’t believe in going by the book. For her comfort always comes first, be it designer or non-designer clothes. She also emphasized that an actor’s work is not defined by the designer wear in their wardrobe.

She said, “Clothes don’t define a person. I agree that a person’s dressing style shows their personality but that has nothing to do with designer or branded clothing. I disagree that actors must have designer wear in their wardrobe, you can keep them out of your own personal choice, but it’s not a must. Also, these designer outfits have nothing to do with an actor’s work. It’s what they do on-screen that defines them, not what they wear.”

She continued on the subject, adding, “Of late ‘Who are you wearing?’ is the most looked down upon questions asked. And it’s not just in India but globally that actors want their work to do the talking rather than what they are wearing. For me, comfort always comes first. I don’t want to wear something that makes me uncomfortable in front of an audience.”

Sargun confessed that she has some personal favourite designers and if ever she needs an outfit, she borrows it from them. “I get styled by stylists for events which are obviously not my clothes. But on a serious note, I buy designer outfits when I am absolutely sure that they can be used on multiple occasions and in multiple ways, and of course they are expensive so I always check with my mom and my sister-in-law, Charu, if they will also wear them. So we always buy clothes which all three of us can wear and not just one of us,” Sargun said.

However, the actress refrained to comment on how expensive these luxury brands, showcasing her respect for the work of designers. “I can’t comment on whether the prices of the outfits are justified or not because it’s the designer’s hard work. Some of them have such intricate work and they take a lot of time. Not to forget, that it’s one industry where you need to create something different every day to make a name for yourself, so it’s totally their call,” she maintained.

Sargun also admitted that she has tried her hands at designing and said, “There was a wedding in the family and I had an outfit in my mind. So I designed it and got it made. It was stunning. My family and friends were surprised to know that I have designed it,” she revealed. The actress concluded by adding that ‘her brain’ is the most expensive item she owns.
