Amitabh Bachchan's iconic baritone has resonated across cinema for decades. However, director Sanjay Gupta encountered an unexpected challenge with Bachchan's voice while filming the 2002 heist thriller Kaante. In a recent interview with Siddharth Kannan, Gupta revealed that Kaante marked Bachchan's first foray into synchronous-sound filmmaking, where dialogue is recorded live during filming.

Gupta recalled, "Kaante was sync-sound, and everyone had to be in their natural space. I don't think Amit ji had ever done anything in sync-sound before that." During rehearsals for a scene with Bachchan, Suniel Shetty, and Kumar Gaurav, Gupta instructed everyone except Bachchan to speak naturally. This prompted him and co-star Sanjay Dutt to share a knowing glance, acknowledging the need to address Bachchan's booming voice.

With a chuckle, Gupta shared, "When the rehearsal happened, me and Sanju exchanged looks and I was thinking, now who bells the cat?" He eventually had a candid conversation with Bachchan, gently suggesting, "Sir, I just wanted to tell you something. I just heard the recording... your voice was getting distorted. So, you had to (gestures to lower it down) because the rest of them are speaking softly."

Bachchan, known for his dramatic delivery, inquired, "You want me to take it softer?" Gupta confirmed, "Yes, more natural." "He gave me that look 'what do you mean more natural?'" Gupta recounted with a laugh. However, after this initial negotiation, the director said the shoot was smooth sailing, stating, "But after that, everything was a piece of cake."

The interview also revealed that Kaante was initially envisioned as a small-scale project with newcomers. However, Sanjay Dutt's enthusiastic response to the idea encouraged Gupta to expand the film's scope. Interestingly, Kaante draws significant inspiration from Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs.
