Nihalani was one of Bollywood’s most influential producers during the 1980s and 1990s. Over the course of his career, he backed several successful commercial entertainers and played a key role in launching and supporting the careers of many actors.

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta took to X (formerly Twitter) to remember Nihalani as a constant presence in the industry. “Pahlaj Ji — you were one of the constants of our industry. Always accessible. Always present. Always generous. You have left leaves a void that no one can fill. Rest in Peace. Om Shanti,” Gupta wrote.

Actor Randeep Hooda also expressed his condolences and offered prayers for Nihalani’s family. “Saddened by the passing of #PahlajNihalani ji. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti,” the actor posted.

Pahlaj Nihalani built a significant reputation as a producer in mainstream Hindi cinema. He is widely credited with launching Govinda as a leading actor with the 1986 film Ilzaam. He also introduced Chunky Panday in Aag Hi Aag the following year.

His production banner delivered several notable hits, including Shola Aur Shabnam and the blockbuster comedy Aankhen. Both films emerged among the biggest commercial successes of their respective years and strengthened Nihalani’s standing in the industry.

Apart from his work as a producer, Nihalani also served as the chairperson of the CBFC from January 2015 to August 2017. His tenure frequently made headlines due to debates surrounding film certification and censorship. During this period, he became one of the most discussed figures in the entertainment industry.

According to reports, Nihalani had been dealing with chronic health complications in recent months and was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis. He underwent treatment at multiple hospitals before passing away at Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Nita, and their three sons.
