It couldn’t have been more blatant than this. Promo of Sanjay Dutt‘s next film Chatur Singh Two Star is out and it is hard not to believe that the film is seemingly a lift from The Pink Panther series. Though it is unlikely that the makers have picked up rights from Steve Martin’s franchise (which itself was inspired by Peter Sellers’ riotous comedy from the 60s), revelation of Dutt as an idiot cop who believes himself to be pretty smart leads one straight to the territory of The Pink Panther.
“It is surprising that the makers didn’t even try to conceal their inspiration and actually prided themselves on bringing this out in open”, says a film enthusiast, “Being inspired isn’t something new to Bollywood in any case but then most at least go a little distance to
make sure that no one comes to know the source. In case of Chatur Singh Two Star, anyone with even minimal familiarity with Hollywood comedies would know that The Pink Panther has been given a Hindi avtar.”
This is pretty much obvious from Dutt’s mannerisms that are not just over the top but also cross all lines of buffoonery. So while Steve Martin was still dignified in his attire and core persona, Dutt has gone a step ahead by wearing outrageous costumes (where the USP is for them to look different when seen from all four directions) and other hideous accessories ranging from joker glasses, nose to wigs.
“It is not just the characterisation but even the basic plot that seems to be a lot similar here”, the observer continues, “Beyonce Knowles took Steve Martin for a ride in the first instalment of The Pink Panther where she projected herself as damsel in distress. Now in Chatur Singh Two Star it is Ameesha Patel who is playing a young woman in trouble and seeking Sanju’s help. References are too many to be ignored.”
One hopes the makers have their answers ready which are convincing enough to counter these charges.
