Sajid Khan, last seen in ‘Bigg Boss’, gave a rare interview to a YouTube channel ‘Timeout With Ankit’ wherein he spoke about the industry practises, box office and a lot more. When asked about actors’ inflated fees, he said, “I feel if an actor is charging a high amount, who’s there to tell him ‘Aap zyada paise maang rahe ho?’. If you won’t pay the actor (the fees that he demands), toh koi aur de dega. After all, gin chun ke 5-6 hi superstars hai. And there’s no lack of producers. There are so many people who enter the industry due to the glam factor. They are willing to invest. At times, they give a hit or else, they run with the tails between their legs.”
He also maintained, “Ultimately, what works at the end of the day is a good film. And a good film, I feel, is a hit film.”
When asked his views on the 2023 blockbuster Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sajid Khan replied, “I liked Animal. Hit film hai. Rs. 500 crores kiya. At times, you might not agree (with the success). For instance, KGF - Chapter 2 (2022) did a business of more than Rs. 400 crores. I saw it with my friends. They said ‘kya bakwaasfilm hai’. I told them, ‘Nahin yaar. We have come to watch the film in the week when it crossed Rs. 400 crores. Hence, we have to bow down to it (and agree) that this is a good film’. Agarbox office strong hai, toh woh filmgalat ho hi nahin sakti. You can say ‘mujhe achhi nahin lagi’. You can’t say that ‘film bakwaas hai’.”
At another point, he explained, “Filmmaking is made up of three elements – just like it is in college – arts, commerce and science. Science is your technical know-how – sound, light, cinematography, editing etc. Art comprises scripting, dialogues, direction, acting etc. And then comes commerce – the money involved, marketing, how to release the film, kitne meinbreak even hoga, kitne mein loss hoga etc.”
He then shared his views on the buy-one-get-one-ticket-free offer, “Hence, every film that releases in a theatre is a commercial film. Unless they say ‘ticket free mein kharid lo’. This happened with a few films where they offered one ticket free with every ticket bought by the moviegoer. It’s like ‘aap remote kharid lo, hum TV free denge’ (laughs)!”
After a gap, Sajid Khan is going to be back as a director. When asked if he was nervous, he replied in the negative, “I am not nervous. A director is nervous before the release of his first film. Then, your nervousness reduces because you feel that you do have a connect with the audience.”
