The actor opened up about Burgundy, Bordeaux and why good friends and a great bottle remain life’s real luxuries.

Saif Ali Khan has always been known for his refined tastes, whether it’s cinema, literature, travel or the finer things in life. But in a recent conversation with Esquire India, the actor offered one of his most personal and detailed reflections yet — on his passion for wine and the unexpected clarity he found while recovering in the hospital after the recent attack on him.

In the short clip that was dropped on social media, Saif revealed the depth of his appreciation for wine, particularly his favourites from Burgundy and Bordeaux. “Some of the best wines I've drunk, Burgundies and Bordeaux,” he began, setting the tone for a conversation that was equal parts enthusiastic and insightful.

He went on to describe the specific wines that have stayed with him over the years. “Two Burgundies I like are Echezo and Nuit Saint-Georges. So Nuit Saint-Georges is such a nice sounding name of a village. Cote de Nuit is the village and Nuit Saint-Georges is the name of the village wine.” His admiration for the region’s craftsmanship was unmistakable as he added, “And with Burgundy, as everyone knows, it's the producer more than anything else. So obviously Leroy is super expensive and the best producer ever. But La Flève is, I think, also a very good, there's so many very good producers.”

His fondness extended equally to Bordeaux. “So that's a great drink. And then the big Bordeaux's who I'm a huge fan of. I think my favorite would be a Ducroux Boccalio, which is a Saint-Julien,” he shared. He continued listing the bottles that have earned a place in his personal collection and memory: “Then there's a Chateau Clinet, which is a Pomerol. A Chateau Hosanna, which is a Pomerol. A Chateau Smith-Le-Fitte, which is a Graves, Graves.”

Saif’s deep dive into his preferences concluded with a smile-worthy admission. “And La Mission Haute-Brionne, which is a Persac Léonard. And so I sound very pretentious now. But I do love red wine,” he added.

But it was his final reflection that truly stood out. Recalling his recent hospital stay, he shared, “I've been lucky enough to drink lots of it. When I was recovering in hospital recently, I was thinking about the nice things in life. And the only real thing I could think of was good friends and a nice bottle of wine.”

In a world that often celebrates extravagance, Saif Ali Khan’s words serve as a reminder that even the most sophisticated tastes circle back to simple joys — companionship, gratitude and the comfort of something you genuinely love.
