Rupali Ganguly confesses being “unprofessional” in the past; says she was not sure if Anupamaa producer Rajan Shahi will cast her : Bollywood News

Rupali Ganguly became a household name with the hit TV show Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai in 2004, where she played the role of Monisha Sarabhai. Her portrayal of the quirky and lovable character was a massive hit with audiences and catapulted her to stardom overnight. Since then, Rupali has appeared in numerous TV shows, films, and theatre productions, establishing herself as a versatile performer. Currently, she is playing the lead character in one of the most popular Hindi TV shows, Anupamaa, which is backed by Rajan Shahi.

During her recent interview with Ranveer Allahbadia for his podcast, Rupali Ganguly revealed that she was a bit surprised upon learning that the show was being produced by Rajan Shahi. Rupali explained that Rajan had also directed her in her debut show, and their working relationship at the time was not the most professional. Therefore, when she heard that he would be producing Anupamaa, her initial reaction was one of disbelief, exclaiming, “arey baap re!"

The actress asserted, “I respect Rajan ji a lot, but the first ever show that I did was Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahi, it was telecast in the year 2000. Rajan ji was the director. He was a first-time director, and back then, I was very misbehaved. I was very unprofessional. I didn’t know how TV functioned, and there was a lot of learning to do. As it is, you’re looked down upon for doing TV because people assumed you’d ‘flopped in films’.”

She further added, “I wasn’t sure if he’d cast me, because I’d troubled him a lot on the first show. The first thing that he asked me was, ‘Have you grown up?’ And I said, ‘Yes, I have a child now’. And Rajan ji decided to cast me. I didn’t know the show was called Anupamaa, till the trailer came in.”

According to Rupali, she was not the first preference for the role and didn't even make it to the top five choices. Nevertheless, she has skillfully made the character her own, and, Anupamaa has become one of the most favoured shows on television.
