In the wake of Thank You For Coming's recent release, the film industry has been buzzing with discussions about its portrayal of sex and empowerment. Some have applauded the movie for its sex-positive messaging and refreshing take on the subject, while others have criticised its depiction of feminism and women's empowerment. Producer Rhea Kapoor addressed these comments and made it clear that sexual liberation is not the sole form of empowerment.

In an interview with News 18, Kapoor asserted, “I think sex is one of the things that’s used to shame and control women all the time. It’s an important part of our lives as it is to men. Women are told to not wear certain clothes and not sit and talk in a certain way because it apparently gives guys a wrong idea.”

She continued, “Sex is used to control our minds. We have the same desires [as men] but somehow are shamed for it. I feel it’s absolutely wrong. It’s one of the ways to set yourself free.”

While the film has been noticed for its portrayal of women who smoke and drink, Rhea went on to acknowledge that it isn't necessarily a sign of progressive feminism. She explained, “I personally agree with the fact that cigarette smoking isn’t the best thing for health. But that doesn’t mean that I try to go ahead and say that no character in my films will smoke. That’s a very thin line. We need to tell stories that make us feel something and we can all relate to.”

Coming back to the film, directed by Karan Boolani, TYFC stars Bhumi Pednekar, Shehnaaz Gill, Dolly Singh, Kusha Kapila and Shibani Bedi. It was released on October 6 after its world premiere at TIFF 2023.
