Yash Raj Films organized a very special chat between Karan Johar and Rani Mukerji to celebrate 30 years of Rani’s incredible cinematic legacy ahead of the release of Mardaani 3. During the 84-minute-long chat, both Karan Johar and Rani Mukerji went down memory lane and shared funny as well as touching anecdotes. Rani opened up about her voice being dubbed in Ghulam (1998).

Rani Mukerji said, “As a newcomer, you don’t have much of a choice because it was really a big thing for me to do a film with opposite Aamir Khan as he was one of the superstars then. I learned later from my director, Vikram Bhatt, that it was the decision taken by Vikram, Mukesh ji and Aamir. But they made Aamir become the bad cop. Aamir explained to me that ‘For films, you have to sacrifice certain things. Probably, your voice is not apt for the character’. He asked me who my favourite actress was. Without blinking, I took Sridevi’s name. He gave me an example on how Sridevi’s voice was dubbed in a lot of her films. Yet, it didn’t stop her from being the star that she became. Using that logic, he asked me to surrender to whatever was best for the film.”
She added, “It was upsetting, but I couldn’t show that I was upset. You need to be a team player whenever you are a part of the film. Whatever is required, we need to do for the film. Even if there are personal disappointments, it doesn’t matter as long as the intent is true for the film.”
At another point, Rani shared a funny anecdote. She said, “We were going for Ghulam’s premiere. Somebody asked me on the plane to sing a song.” KJo asked, “And you sang, ‘Aati Kya Khandala’ in a plane?” Rani replied, “Yeah (laughs).”
Karan joked, “Was the plane going to Khandala?” Rani said, “Obviously not. It was going to Delhi. If I am not mistaken, it was Bhawana Somaaya aunty from the media who asked me to sing the song. I remember sleeping on her lap with my hair fully oiled.”
