Yash Raj Films organized a very special chat between Karan Johar and Rani Mukerji to celebrate 30 years of Rani’s incredible cinematic legacy ahead of the release of Mardaani 3. During the 84-minute-long chat, both Karan Johar and Rani Mukerji went down memory lane and shared funny as well as touching anecdotes. One of the most heartfelt moment was when Rani had tears in her eyes when she remembered the time when Karan Johar put his foot down and insisted that Rani would dub for her own lines. Rani admitted that it was a big decision as her voice was dubbed in her earlier film, Ghulam (1998).
Rani Mukerji said, “The team of Ghulam dubbed my voice. And I really owe this to Karan. We were shooting for the teaser of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998).” She stopped and said, “I am teary eyed.”
Karan sweetly got up, hugged and kissed Rani’s forehead. As Rani composed herself, KJo continued the story, “It was Aditya Chopra’s idea that there should be a teaser where Rani is sitting on a swing with baby Anjali.”
Then Rani Mukerji added, “You made me wear a white chudidar, as if I was the ghost! I remember you came to me during the shoot of that promo and said, ‘Rani, are they dubbing your voice in Ghulam’. I said, ‘Yeah’. You asked, ‘Do you have a problem with dubbing with your quintessential way of talking?’. I replied, ‘No, I don’t. I even dubbed my first film, Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat (1996)’. I still remember the way you said, ‘I love your voice and you’ll dub for my film’.”
Yet again, Rani got emotional as she said, “Thanks to you Karan, that I was able to retain my voice.”
Karan Johar shared, “I was sitting with my dad (Yash Johar) and I was informed that the distributors insisted that Rani’s voice should be dubbed. They reasoned, ‘Audience accept nahin karenge’. I retorted, ‘Woh toh nayi-nayi aayi hai. Audience use jaanti nahin hai’ (laughs)!”
He continued, “My father also said, ‘Yeh kya pagalpan hai? We are not changing. Kisi ki awaaz kyun badle hum?’. My father gave me an anecdote, ‘I was told to change Amitabh Bachchan’s voice in Agneepath (1990). Aur dekho kya ho gaya! Main nahin badlunga kisi ki awaaz’.”
