Yash Raj Films organized a very special chat between Karan Johar and Rani Mukerji to celebrate 30 years of Rani’s incredible cinematic legacy ahead of the release of Mardaani 3. During the 84-minute-long chat, both Karan Johar and Rani Mukerji went down memory lane and shared funny as well as touching anecdotes. Rani opened up on how she felt on not winning the National Award for her outstanding performance in Black (2005). That year, the award went to Sarika for her role in Parzania (2007).

Rani Mukerji admitted, “It broke the hearts of all my fans. It broke my father’s and mother’s hearts. I started off as an actor because my mom asked me to be one. I realized that through my work, I could give my parents a better life and see them happy and comfortable. That was my dream for a few years when I kept working in films.”

She added, “Those days, there was no social media. We would only get fan mail. Through those mails, I realized how important it was to give my fans back what they want from me. I realized I need to do better films and deliver better performances. That’s when I understood the seriousness of the profession. Since then, I had my blinkers on like a horse.”

When asked if it hurt that she didn’t win, Rani replied, “Yes, it does.”

Karan pointed out that Amitabh Bachchan and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali won for their works in Black and that everyone, from the audience to the film fraternity, felt that she, too, deserved to be honoured.

Rani remarked, “Its good that it happened. Very early in my life, I realized that even after you do your best work, you might not get the recognition that you deserve. Probably somebody else’s performance is better than yours. You have to keep striving for the best.”

Rani Mukerji finally won the National Award for her performance in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway (2023).
