The team behind Rang De Basanti came together in Mumbai to mark 20 years of the film with a commemorative screening. Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra reunited with cast members Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, Soha Ali Khan, Siddharth Suryanarayan, Kunal Kapoor and Atul Kulkarni to revisit the 2006 film that remains a notable chapter in contemporary Indian cinema. Also present at the event were Ronnie Screwvala, Siddharth Roy Kapur and Ajit Andhare, Head of Star Studio18.
Released two decades ago, Rang De Basanti found a strong connection with young audiences and became widely associated with themes of civic responsibility and youth engagement. The film was selected as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards and received international recognition, including a BAFTA nomination. It also won multiple National Film Awards, including the National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
Over the years, the film has maintained a steady presence in popular culture, aided by its music and performances. Its inclusion in IMDb’s Top 250 Movies of All Time places it among a small group of Indian films to receive sustained global attention.
The reunion served as a reflective moment for the cast and crew, highlighting the film’s journey over 20 years and its continued relevance for new audiences. Rang De Basanti is part of Star Studio18’s film library, which spans more than 250 titles across eight Indian languages, and is currently available for streaming on JioHotstar.
