Actor Randeep Hooda, gearing up for his directorial debut Sawatantrya Veer Savarkar, commemorated the death anniversary of Indian independence activist Vinayak Damodar Savarkar with a heartfelt message and photos on social media.

On February 26, 2024, Randeep took to his Instagram handle, sharing pictures from his visit to the Cellular Jail (popularly known as 'Kalapani') in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where Savarkar was imprisoned by the British Raj. He also penned a lengthy note expressing his profound respect for the freedom fighter.

"Today is the death anniversary of Sawatantrya Veer Savarkar, a man whose towering intellect and fierce courage scared the British so much that they locked him in this 7 by 11 foot jail in Kalapani for two lifetimes (50 years)," Hooda wrote in his Instagram caption.

The Kick actor further shared a personal experience, attempting to understand the hardships Savarkar endured: "During the recce of his biopic, I tried to lock myself inside this cell to feel what he must have gone through. I couldn't stay locked for even 20 minutes, while he was locked for 11 years, often in solitary confinement."

Hooda went on to acknowledge Savarkar's resilience and lasting impact: "I imagined the unparalleled endurance of #VeerSavarkar who endured the cruelty and inhumane conditions of the imprisonment and yet managed to build and inspire the armed revolution. His perseverance and contribution is unmatchable, hence for decades the Anti India forces still continue to vilify him....Naman (respect)," the actor-turned-director added.

This visit and message come ahead of the release of 'Sawatantrya Veer Savarkar' on March 22, 2024. The film, directed by Hooda himself, stars him as Savarkar alongside actors Ankita Lokhande and Amit Sial. It narrates the life and struggles of the controversial figure in Indian history.
