Ramu bows down to Big B’s wish : Bollywood News

20 years back, Amitabh Bachchan had taken a huge risk with his voice being changed for the part of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan. The film was Agneepath and the director who had the courage to back this risk was Mukul S. Anand. Unfortunately, the experimentation backfired and the actor swore never to change his voice again. Circa 2012 and Big B is taking a similar risk again for Ram Gopal Varma's Department where he has let go off his trademark baritone and tried to do something different again.

"If you notice, Bachchan is sounding remarkably different from his usual self. While his accent is basically complimenting the street-smart character of gangster turned politician that he is playing, what is remarkable is a different pitching that he has given to his voice", says an observer.

Apparently, this is how Bachchan himself wanted to bring in a change in his presentation. Though Ramu was fine with him playing it in the way that has been loved by masses over the decades, it was Big B who felt that the change was needed.

"In any case, he couldn't have let it become another Sarkar", says a source, "Both are RGV films where Bachchan has played a power supremo. While Sarkar had him in a far serious and brooding avtar, Department showcases him as someone far jovial and fun loving. To compliment that, Bachchan decided to make his voice a little shrill and deep. Hence you hear him sounding totally different from his usual self."

Admits Ramu, "Yes, this was Amitji's idea. Since his character has a gangster background to it, he wanted to bring in some imperfection as well. He not just wanted to change his voice but also speak Hindi which is different from a normal way. Also, it was a conscious call taken by him to change his tone."

Hope the audience response to this experimentation is better than the kind that was meted out for Agneepath.
