The release of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal has triggered various reactions, not just among the critics but also the general audience on social media. And now, veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has, for the first time, written a long review of the Ranbir Kapoor starrer to share what he thought of the movie.
Varma stars off the review by stating his admiration for filmmaker Adrian Lyne who had said that a film “should not be merely liked or disliked by the audience members, but it should make them violently disagree and argue about what the film stands for, which is what Sandeep Vanga achieved BIG TIME in ANIMAL,” said RGV.
The filmmaker said that Vanga has ripped off the clothes of “moral hypocrisy.” “There will be massive fights over the content and the character of Ranbir in ANIMAL long after its box office run is over and I truly believe it can also trigger a cultural overhaul due to the way Sandeep has ripped off the clothes of moral hypocrisy with his bare naked honesty,” said the director.
RGV admitted that he didn’t care about the plot as he missed one scene featuring Anil Kapoor. But he loved how, according to him, Vanga gave an “electric shock” to a lot of filmmakers. “Sandeep gave a electric shock to all those film makers who got stuck in a template system by ripping off their clothes and making them even more naked than he did with Ranbir in the film, and he just with a broom stick scooped up all their mediocracy and threw it in a garbage can.”
RGV added that although he felt that the pace of the film is slow, it startled him because of its length and that he would have been fine even if it was four and a half hours long. A hugely surprising moment for RGV was the one where he expected Ranbir to come with a baseball bat or something similar but, instead, he came with a huge machine gun. “That almost made us all fall off our chairs and that moment is a pure cinematic gem,” said the filmmaker.
Ranbir’s wild character is facing criticisms on social media. But RGV saw a lot of innocence in it. “And the proof of that is Ranbir most of the times looks genuinely surprised when the other characters don’t understand him and that’s what innocence is truly about,” added RGV.

RGV further said that scenes like bra strap spanking and talking about sex with doctors seemingly have no context but they help in driving the protagonist’s character into the audience’s minds.
There were also things Varma didn’t like in Animal, like the fight with masked guys, body double sequence and the climax as he felt they were outside the “tone” of the film.
RGV also went onto say that what Vanga has done in Animal is beyond what Francis Coppola did in Godfather. “The sister beating vijay after learning he killed her husband, and him admonishing her after that is BRILLIANT, because Sandeep has taken that content far beyond what Francis Coppola did in the scene of Connie confronting Michael Corleone after learning he killed her husband Carlo, but in ANIMAL the high light is he himself tells his sister,” said RGV.
Bobby Deol has made heads turn in Animal and RGV was bowled over by his entry scene. “The villain bobby‘s intro has to be the most original villain introduction ever in FILM HISTORY because he is literally unveiled like a bride in a split screen effect ..That’s Just GENIUS. Another genius moment is when vijay celebrates walking naked in front of his family and staff to make a statement on his perfectly regained health,” he said.
Coming to Rashmika Mandanna’s character, RGV said, “The only time I disliked Vijay’s character is when he asks the girl to lick his shoe and I think that’s because of the brilliant casting of that actress which evoked an instant empathy in me the moment I saw her and it only grew with every close up of hers. Rashmika’s confrontation scene on her asking him about condom usage is just a brilliantly written and executed scene and I was bowled over with her performance.”
Varma also went onto say that there hasn’t been a more consistent and intense character in Indian cinema in its 110 years of history. He also hailed Ranbir to be greater than Leonardo DiCaprio. “Not from the 1st film of india, Raja Harishchandra in 1913 till now in 2023 in the last 110 years was there more consistency and intensity in an actor’s portrayal of a character than what Ranbir did in ANIMAL. Except for that one single scene where he asks that girl to lick his shoe, I felt his performance was superior to even of Leonardo de caprio in wolf of wall street. More than him being physically naked in a particular scene, he was emotionally naked throughout the film in his performance which takes much more strength of mind than just being physically naked,” he said.
Lastly, RGV said that he wants to touch Vanga’s feet and shared his reasons for the same. “Hey @imvangasandeep please send a photo of ur feet on my whatsap so that I can touch them for the following reasons
U completely shattered every rule of what all conventional film makers believed from the point of time, the professional camera was invented
Inside every film office whether in Bollywood or in south, your film will hover around like a ghost when they are making any creative decisions regarding their future films
From Alfred Hitchcock to Steven Spielberg to many directors of today, who believe that both film and scenes should be as short in length as possible to make a point , u took ur own sweet time in cutting the throats of their beliefs and I loved every inch of that length of urs (pun intended )
Stars of all languages will dream of having characters like this to perform and this will give rise to a completely new set of writers and directors which in turn will expand and stretch the horizons of creativity and originality
Ram Gopal Varma ended the review by saying, in his own style, that he wants to lick Vanga’s shoes. “Like I already said, I din’t like the shot of Ranbir asking the girl to lick his shoe but for just that one JUMP CUT from Anil’s last dialogue to the end titles camera zooming out shot showing Ranbir crying like a baby in Shakti Kapoor’s lap, I want to lick both your shoes,” he signed off.
