In his note, Raj praised Smita’s talent and described her as a “truly great actor” and “extraordinarily good.” He wrote that the same qualities that defined her performances on screen also shaped who she was as a person. According to him, Smita’s deep empathy allowed her to portray the struggles of ordinary people with honesty and sensitivity, turning simple stories into powerful narratives that resonated with audiences.
Raj also expressed regret over the short time she spent with the world. He wrote that although Smita was with audiences for only a brief period, her presence continued to live on through her work. Remembering her on her punyatithi, he noted that her early departure remained an unanswered mystery and a lasting sense of loss.
Raj Babbar and Smita Patil’s personal life
Smita Patil married Raj Babbar in 1983 after the two met on the sets of the film Bheegi Palkein in 1982. At the time, Raj was already married to Nadira Babbar. Smita and Raj’s marriage lasted until her untimely death. She passed away in 1986 due to childbirth complications, just a few weeks after the birth of their son, actor Prateik Babbar. Smita was only 31 years old at the time of her death.
Earlier this year, on Smita’s birth anniversary, Raj had also shared an emotional tribute, recalling her ability to connect with audiences through her performances. In that post, he reflected on how she used cinema as a means to challenge social norms and stereotypes. He noted that her understanding of complex characters rooted in society set her apart and that, despite her short life, she achieved a great deal. He added that the brevity of her life continued to feel like an unhealed loss.
Smita Patil’s legacy in Indian cinema
Smita Patil was widely regarded as one of the most influential actors of the parallel cinema movement of the 1980s. She received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, for her contribution to the arts. Over the years, she remains remembered for her versatility and powerful performances in films such as Manthan, Bazaar, Ardh Satya, and Waaris. Her work continues to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike, cementing her legacy as a significant figure in Indian cinema.
