The Indian film industry is celebrating a historic global moment after Boong, the debut feature of Manipuri filmmaker Lakshmipriya Devi, won the Best Children’s & Family Film honour at the British Academy Film Awards. The coming-of-age film, backed by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s banner Excel Entertainment, has sparked widespread appreciation across the country.
Filmmaker Karan Johar took to social media to celebrate the achievement, writing simply, “Proud,” while applauding the team for bringing global recognition to Indian storytelling. He added, “Huge congratulations to @faroutakhtar @ritesh sid @lp devi for this incredible and honourable BAFTA win!!!! #BOONG .”
Actor and politician Kangana Ranaut also congratulated the team and shared a personal note recalling her early association with the filmmaker. She wrote, “Congratulations @lp_devi and the entire team of Boong for this award. You spoke so well and look great.”
She further added an emotional message addressed to the director:
“Dear LP, when we first worked together more than a decade ago, you were my first AD on a film called Game, whispers on the sets were that LP is made for greatness. Your time is here my friend, you have no idea how much honour/respect you have brought to the entertainment industry, India and the north east. Wish you the best. Keep shining.”
Actors Ishaan Khatter, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Aditi Rao Hydari also joined the celebrations online, reacting with heart emojis and warm messages in support of the film’s achievement.
Produced by Excel Entertainment along with Chalkboard Entertainment and Suitable Pictures, Boong had earlier premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it received early praise for its storytelling and visual sensitivity.
The BAFTA recognition marks a significant milestone for Indian cinema, particularly for films emerging from regional industries, reinforcing the country’s expanding presence on the global film stage.
