Filmmaker Aditya Dhar is widely known today for directing the blockbuster Uri: The Surgical Strike and the 2025 all-time hit Dhurandhar. However, according to veteran director Priyadarshan, Dhar’s journey in the film industry began with several setbacks long before his directorial success.

In a recent interview with Variety India, Priyadarshan recalled that Dhar worked closely with him for several years and was already contributing creatively during that time. The filmmaker revealed that Dhar had written for a few films but did not receive proper credit for his work, which left him deeply disappointed.
“When Aditya was working with me, he was also writing dialogues. For three years, I think, we worked together,” Priyadarshan said. “I was always positive about him because he had a wonderful command over language. That was his biggest asset at that time.”
He further explained that Dhar had approached him during a difficult phase in his career. “He came to me when he was very disappointed with a few films which actually he penned, but he never got the credit,” Priyadarshan added.
The director also shared that Dhar had once pursued cricket seriously in his younger years. According to him, the filmmaker had the potential to make it to the Under-19 cricket team but lost the opportunity due to political influences. “He was a cricketer but he could not get into the Under-19 team because of some political influence, so he was moved out. He was very disappointed sitting at home,” Priyadarshan said.
The turning point, he added, came after Dhar watched the 1993 film Gardish. “Someone called him to watch a film, and that was Gardish. After watching it, he said, ‘This is something I want to do,’ and he came to Mumbai,” the filmmaker recalled.

Today, Dhar has established himself as a prominent director in Hindi cinema. He is currently putting the final touches on his upcoming film Dhurandhar The Revenge, which is scheduled to release on March 19.
Meanwhile, Priyadarshan is busy promoting his next film Bhooth Bangla, which marks his reunion with Akshay Kumar. The film also stars Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Wamiqa Gabbi and Tabu, and is scheduled to release in theatres on April 10, 2026.
