Filmmaker Karan Johar has shared his review of Subedaar, praising the film and particularly applauding Anil Kapoor’s performance. Subedaar began 2026 on a strong note for Kapoor after premiering on Amazon Prime Video on March 5. Nearly ten days after its release, appreciation for the film continues to pour in from across the industry. Johar is the latest filmmaker to share his thoughts.
Taking to Instagram Stories on March 14, Johar wrote a brief but enthusiastic note about the film. “I am late to this rock solid gut punch party!!!! What an amazing watch and how outstanding is @anilskapoor ... convincing and riveting in equal measure ... he is GOLD!!! Love you AK!!! Congratulations to the entire cast and to Suresh and to @primevideoin for making such a Bharpoor film!!!!!,” he wrote.
The film is produced by Vikram Malhotra, Anil Kapoor and Suresh Triveni. The story has been written by Triveni and Prajwal Chandrashekar, with Triveni also directing the project. Alongside Kapoor in the lead role, the film features Radhika Madan as Shyama, Aditya Rawal as Prince and Mona Singh as Babli Didi. Faisal Malik and Saurabh Shukla also appear in pivotal roles.
Earlier, filmmaker Hansal Mehta praised the film and noted that Triveni steps outside his usual space as a director. According to him, the film pays homage to the unapologetic style of 1980s cinema while blending strong performances with sharp writing.
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap also shared his thoughts on Instagram. An excerpt from his post read: “Beautifully photographed landscape, fantastic highway chase, realistic action. At the time when everyone is following the (over the top) action trope, the minimalism here really gets you in. Congratulations to all involved. Give it a shot. P.S. The actor who plays Ranveer is fantastic. Yeh hai meri waali commercial film.”
