en Bollywood News Pratik Gandhi advocates for theatre’s prestige: “If people are willing to pay Rs 500 for a film….”

The acclaimed actor highlights the importance of theatre in enriching artists' souls and calls for a shift in perception towards live performances.

Pratik Gandhi, known for his stellar performances on screen and stage, recently delved into the significance of theatre and the unique nuances of Hindi language in the wake of his latest work, Dedh Bigha Zameen. Emerging from the vibrant world of Gujarati theatre, Gandhi emphasized the unparalleled experience that theatre offers, describing it as a vital source for an actor's growth and spontaneity. In an interview with IANS, he underscored theatre's role as a grounding force, enriching an artist's soul and refining their craft through the absence of retakes and the immediacy of live performance.

Pratik Gandhi also emphasized the need to change the perception of theatre as a less affluent medium. He stated, “Theater sabse ameer medium hona chaahiye (theatre should be the most affluent medium). If people are willing to pay Rs 500 for a film, then they should be willing to pay Rs 1,500 for a theatre play. I feel with technological evolution reaching mind-boggling heights and information traveling at lightning speed from one part of the planet to the other, a live experience like theatre will become more exclusive.”

Discussing his recent project, Dedh Bigha Zameen, Gandhi shed light on the distinct Hindi dialect employed in the film, attributing its authenticity to a skilled dialect coach. He revealed that the film's dialogue carried a melodious quality, a departure from standard spoken Hindi, and shared insights from his training process. Emphasizing the importance of enunciation, his dialect coach's guidance on accentuating the 'H' sound in words to maintain rhythm and meter contributed to Gandhi's nuanced portrayal in the film.

Looking ahead, Pratik Gandhi's diverse repertoire continues to expand, with his upcoming portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in the series Gandhi, directed by Hansal Mehta, generating anticipation. Set against the backdrop of London, the series promises to explore the untold facets of Gandhi's life, with Pratik Gandhi starring alongside international talent such as Tom Felton. With his unwavering commitment to his craft and his passion for both theatre and screen, Pratik Gandhi stands as a beacon of artistic excellence in the entertainment industry.
