As tensions surge in West Asia following a joint US–Israeli military campaign against Iran, filmmaker Onir and director Sudhir Mishra engaged in a public exchange on X (formerly Twitter), reflecting differing perspectives on the assassination at the centre of the crisis and the reactions surrounding it.

Onir and Sudhir Mishra differ on response to Iran leader’s death: “Let Iranians handle their country”

Onir began the conversation by commenting on the public mourning that followed the killing of what he described as a “vile dictator.” In his post, he wrote that while he understood protests against the assassination — calling such actions “illegal and dangerous for the world” — he found it troubling that the same groups had not mourned the “thousands of innocent girls” killed under the regime.

Sudhir Mishra responded by urging restraint. “Relax Onir,” he wrote, adding that “millions of Iranians mourn the death of innocent girls.” Mishra cautioned that such developments could “worsen the state of many more innocent girls because people will rally around the regime.” He further stated that Iranians should be allowed to handle their own country, just as Indians would not welcome outside interference in domestic affairs.

Clarifying his stance, Onir reiterated that he considered the killing and the ensuing war “illegal and dangerous.” He stressed that his criticism was not directed at Iranians but at “those in India who are silent about atrocities against women” yet were vocal in mourning the leader’s death. “Only they have the right to decide their future,” he added, referring to the Iranian people.

Mishra later responded to Onir’s clarification with three folded hands emojis, signalling closure to the direct exchange. However, Onir continued the discussion in a reply to another user. He wrote that it was important to “condemn this dastardly killing” and never support it, but added that remaining silent about atrocities by any leader — including religious figures — was not acceptable. “The Pope too is not above criticism,” he wrote, while also stating that he condemned similar issues involving self-styled godmen."

The exchange comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension, with the situation in the region evolving rapidly and prompting global economic and security concerns.
