Ahead of the release of Vanvaas, Nana Patekar collaborated with his ‘Majnu’ aka Anil Kapoor in a rare, candid, and heartfelt conversation where they opened up about their journey in the Indian film industry. While this unfiltered interaction showcased their camaraderie, Nana also addressed the negative feeling he had harbored towards Anil for 19 years over losing the role of his older brother in the 1989 blockbuster film Parinda. Jackie Shroff replaced Nana’s role as Anil’s brother and the latter ended up playing the antagonist Anna.
Nana Patekar reveals how he was replaced in Parinda by Jackie Shroff because of Anil Kapoor; says, “Tujhe yaad hai maine 19 saal tere saath kaam nahi kia. Mujhe laga yeh bakwaas aadmi hai”Starting the conversation with how Anil Kapoor was a star during the 80s and how he ‘bullied’ Nana Patekar, the latter shared "Parinda mein iske bade bhai ka role, Jackie ka role main kar raha tha. Humne rehearsal sab kiya tha. Baad mein Jackie iski (Anil) wajah se aaya. Lekin main iska shukriya ada bhi karna chahta hoon isiliye kyun ki mujhe Anna karne ko mila (In Parinda, I was signed to do the role of his elder brother. We had started the rehearsals even. And later, because of him, Jackie came on board. Of course, I should also thank him because then, I got to play the role of Anna)”. Further, he shared how Anil felt that their looks won’t match and assumed that it was the reason behind Kapoor’s decision. "Kyunki main tere hisaab se tera bhai dikhta nahi tha. Jackie dikh sakta tha, lekin main nahi dikh sakta kya? Kyun ek kaala ek gora nahi ho sakta (Because, according to you I didn’t look like your brother. You felt that Jackie could pull it off but not me? Can’t one of them be darker than the other?)"
However, a surprised Anil Kapoor patiently clarified and opened up about how he has been a casting director for one of the most appreciated 1980 film Hum Paanch featuring a power-packed star cast. He elaborated on how he has played multiple roles behind the camera in his initial years including being a casting director. He continued, "I don't wanna take credit but I have played a big role in the casting of Hum Paanch. Everybody wanted other actors to play but I did the casting for this one. So somewhere I felt that Jackie would be the best choice for my brother's role", he stated.
Followed by his admission, Nana continued to add how he lost the role, and stated that he refused to work with Anil for almost 19 years. “Uske baad maine tere saath ek bhi film nahi ki. 19 saal baad humne Welcome kiya. Maine kahan yeh to bakwaas aadmi hai (After that, I didn’t do a single film with you. After 19 years, we did Welcome. Because I was like what a horrible man he is)”. Anil Kapoor, however, continued to assert that he had nothing against Nana and added that it was eventually the director’s choice. "You give a suggestion to a director but eventually it is the call of the director. Directors actors ke kande pe bandook rakhte hai. But the fact is that the director also felt that Jackie would be a better fit for that role", he insisted.
"I feel like in a lot of cases, casting is very important. Me, my father, all of us have been in this business for 60 years. Main film ke saath kabhi dagaah nahi karunga (I will never betray a film)”, he asserted.
Speaking of Parinda, the film, directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, is considered to be a turning point in the introduction of realism in Hindi cinema by many. It won two National Film Awards including one which was presented to Nana Patekar in the Best Supporting Actor category.
