Moushumi Chatterjee breaks silence on retirement speculation, reveals why she took a long break: “Who said I am retiring?”

“Who said I am retiring?”

In a conversation with Mid-day, Chatterjee addressed the rumours directly, saying: “Who said I am retiring? Not only am I well enough to work, but I am selective about it. If acting work comes my way that meets my price, terms and conditions, is interesting, and of substantial standards, I am very much open to it. Please do not take anyone else’s word.”

She attributed her absence from screens over the past few years to the death of her elder daughter, Payal.

“I wasn’t shooting regularly as I was grieving my elder daughter, Payal’s death. That is why there was a long gap for a few years. When Payal passed away, I couldn’t work for three to four years,” she said.

Waiting for a role with substance

Chatterjee made clear that she remains particular about the kinds of parts she will accept.

“I cannot do just any role like a mother saying, ‘Beta aa jao, khana khaa lo’. I would love to do a role which has at least one or two good scenes and suits my age,” she told the publication.

She also expressed interest in taking on a morally complex character, adding: “It would be a challenge for me, but there has to be some substance in the role. Actors are like water; they will take any shape you put them in.”

On how work has found her over the years without her seeking it out, she said: “I have never visited anybody’s office and asked for work. God has been not just kind but partial to me.”

She added that she misses seeing herself on screen and is keen to return with a role of real weight.

Her recent work

Chatterjee was seen in the 2025 Bengali film Aarii, alongside Yash Dasgupta, and appeared in a television commercial with Sonakshi Sinha.

She has also made guest appearances on television. Her last Hindi film release was Piku in 2015. Her daughter Meghaa now handles her professional commitments.
