Meenakshi Seshadri reveals that she was ousted from Damini after rejecting the marriage proposal from Rajkumar Santoshi; says, “It is below my dignity to turn this into a fight”

Meenakshi Seshadri explained how she stood up against something that was not right, drawing parallels to her famous onscreen role Damini.

Being one of her most iconic roles till date, actress Meenakshi Seshadri has always opened up about Damini being close to her heart. Now years later, the actress opened up about an incident when she was asked to quit the film because she had refused the marriage proposal of the film’s director Rajkumar Santoshi. In fact, drawing parallels to her character in the film, the actress revealed that she decided to fight against the unjust practice and voice out her opinion.

In an interview with Zoom, Meenakshi Seshadri recalled what had transpired when she refused to marry Rajkumar Santoshi, further asserting that it was their mutual decision to not discuss such things in public. “Santoshi ji and I decided not to talk about it. It is water under the bridge. But the courage to stand up was important because nobody should be told they aren’t required anymore. It had several implications for rules in the workforce and beyond. I dealt with it by keeping quiet. I just said that I will choose not to comment on this as it is below my dignity to turn this into a fight. This is not a fight,” she told the news portal.

However, the Damini actress also shared that she believed in standing up for what she feels is wrong. “I stood up for what I believe in, and if things were going to work out, we would work together as a team. That was the message I wanted to give to the film fraternity and the audiences. I was there to make a great film, and Damini was definitely going to be that,” she added.

She also expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards everyone who stood by her and stated, “I respect all the people involved with the film, especially Santoshi ji because his vision was tremendous. Ultimately, they say action speaks louder than words, so the Producers Guild, the Artists Guild, all came together to make it happen.”

Also starring Rishi Kapoor, Sunny Deol, Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, among others in key roles, Damini showcased the struggle of a woman who decides to go against her influential in-laws in order to give justice to her house-help who was gangraped in by her brother-in-law and his friends.
